METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli 1

2 METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli
Introduction / Safety measures

1. Introduction
The METTLER TOLEDO oven sample changer Stromboli is a carrousel-type sample changer with an integrated
drying oven for automated analysis in titration. By following the heating of the sample with a Karl Fischer
titration, the water content of liquids and solids is determined. All important parameters are selected in the
method on the titrator.
The METTLER TOLEDO KF titrator DL38 (software version 2.0 or higher) and the METTLER TOLEDO KF
coulometer DL39 (software version 1.1 or higher) can control the Stromboli and analyze a sample se-
ries.
In these operating instructions, you can find all information necessary to correctly install and operate the
Stromboli with all the equipment included in the delivery. Instead of KF coulometer and KF titrator, the word
"titrator" is used to describe either. The DL39 is shown in the diagrams as an example.
In the operating instructions of the METTLER TOLEDO titrators DL38 and DL39, you will find all the informa-
tion pertaining to the setup, methods and auxiliary functions, so that you may perform sample series with
the Stromboli.

2. Safety measures
The oven sample changer Stromboli may only be operated by people trained in the use of the instruments
and corresponding chemicals. If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the
protection provided by the equipment may be impaired. The Stromboli has been tested for the experiments
and intended purposes documented in these operating instructions. However, this does not absolve you
from the responsibility of performing your own tests of the products supplied by us regarding their suitability
for the methods and purposes you intend to use them for. You should therefore observe the following safety
measures.

2.1 Measures for your protection

4 METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli

Description of the instrument

– To perform sample series you must always place an empty glass vial between
the last measured sample vial and the subsequent blank vial when running a
series with increasing temperatures and different samples. For example, tem-
perature ramp such as MT methods M396 (C30) and M313 (V30).
Caution
If there is no empty glass vial between the sample and the blank vial, the
subsquent temperature is first achieved in the last vial (sample) before moving
the next vial to the oven. This can lead to decomposition if the last sample is
thermally instable.

Description of the instrument

3. Description of the instrument

The oven sample changer Stromboli is a sample changer with an integrated drying oven for automatic
determination of water according to Karl Fischer. The water content of up to 13 samples, a blank value and
a drift can be analyzed in one single sample series. Stromboli is especially suitable for insoluble samples
or samples whose water cannot be extracted with an appropriate solvent, or such samples whose deter-
mination can result in incorrect results due to side reactions with the KF reagents. The water of a sample is
thermally released in the drying oven and then carried, by means of inert and dried purge gas, to the titrator
(KF titrator DL38 or KF coulometer DL39), where it is analyzed.
Stromboli consists of an oven, a sample rack, a drive housing and a drying unit.

6 METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli

Description of the instrument

Hygroscopic samples, or samples losing water before the analysis, can be

protected by aluminum foil glued to the top of the vial. The sample vials Cap
placed in the sample rack are automatically lifted into the oven one by one
and then heated. At the same time, the aluminum foil beneath the cap is Aluminum foil
punctured. The dried purge gas (air or some other carrier gas) flows through
the heated sample in the oven and transports the released water to the titrator
for analysis.

Sample vial
The heating temperature (max. 300 °C), as well as all the parameters neces-
sary for the automatic analysis are entered on the DL38 (METTLER method
"910 Stromboli") or the DL39 (METTLER method "912 Stromboli"). Starting
this method begins the automatic analysis of a sample series.

You have the option of working with inert gas (nitrogen, helium, argon, etc.) or ambient air as purge gas. The
instrument is equipped with an efficient two-stage purge gas drying system (e.g., silica gel and molecular
sieve). A built-in flowmeter regulates the flow of gas. A transfer tube is included in the delivery for the transfer
of gas from the drying oven to the titrator. An optional heatable transfer tube is available.

METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli 7

Installation

4. Installation
For correct installation and proper operation, the following points need to be observed:
• Place the titrator, Stromboli and drying unit in a clean, dry and dust-free place.
• Before operation, all parts of the instrument must have reached ambient temperature to prevent condensa-
tion.
• All parts must be dry before operation.

4.1 Adapting the operating voltage

On the rear side of the Stromboli you find a small mark indicating the
currently set operating voltage (100…120 VAC, 3,15 A slow bloe fuse or Mark
220…240 VAC, 1,6 A slow blow fuse).
– Disconnect power cable.
– Loosen the fuse holder with a screwdriver. Insert fuse according to the
operating voltage.
1
– Reinstall the fuse holder and reconnect power cable.

4.2 Preparing the drying unit

The purge gas flowing trough the sample must be water free, therefore it is
dryed in the drying unit.
The water of a sample is thermally released in the drying oven and then car-
ried, by means of inert and dried purge gas, to the titrator (KF titrator DL38
or KF coulometer DL39), where it is analyzed.
– Fill both bottles with an appropriate drying agent (not included in the de-
livery), e.g., silica gel (first drying stage) and a molecular sieve (second
drying stage)
– Fasten caps securely.
– Place the bottles in the drying unit.

Connecting transfer tube

The evaporated water of a sample is carried by the
purge gas through the transfer tube to the titration
vessel of the titrator.
– Connect both ends of the transfer tube to the corre-
sponding connectors on the oven and the titrator.

Connecting the heatable transfer tube

A heatable transfer tube is available as optional
equipment. The heatable sheath (approx. 75 °C)
prevents condensation in the transfer tube. As long
as the Stromboli is switched on, the transfer tube is
heated.
– Connect both ends of the transfer tube to the corre-
sponding connectors on the oven and the titrator.
– Connect the plug of the heatable sheath to the
outlet on the back of the Stromboli.

Putting into operation

5. Putting into operation

5.1 Putting Titrator and Stromboli into operation
Before operation, all parts must have reached ambient temperature in order to prevent
condensation.

After you have installed all instruments and parts correctly, you can start the Stromboli as follows:
– Turn on the power switch on the Stromboli. The
instrument is initialized automatically. The green Green LED (Power)
LED on the top side of the Stromboli lights up.
Note Red LED (Error)
If the red LED lights up, the instrument is malfunction-
ing (see "6. Error messages and malfunctions").
Temperature display

– Start up the titrator and call up the desired method,

e.g., METTLER method "910 Stromboli" (DL38) resp. METTLER method "912 Stromboli" (DL39).
– Enter the desired parameters, e.g., the set temperature (50…300 °C) and mixing time and save the
method. During the mixing time, the water is released from the sample and transferred to the titrator by
the purge gas.
Note
Select the mixing time in such a manner that the transfer of the water is guaranteed.
– Set the gas flow at the flowmeter of the drying unit to the desired value (mL/min).
– Start the method. As soon as the set and current temperature coincide by ±2 °C, the method is contin-
ued.
As soon as the method has been started, drift, blank and sample values are
determined for the entire series in the sequence of their placement on the
sample rack.

Note
While a Stromboli is attached to a titrator and switched on, each titration
is started automatically, regardless of whether "Autostart" has been set to
"Yes" or "No". The Stromboli must be switched off for a KF method without
Stromboli!

METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli 15

Putting into operation

5.2 Preparing samples

The maximum volume of a sample vial is 20 mL. We recommend that you prepare all sample vials of a
series in the same way:
– Pre-dry the sample vials (e.g., over night in a drying cabinet at 75 °C).
Cold glass could cause condensation. Cap
– Add sample to sample vial.
Aluminum seal
– Put the aluminum seal in place if the sample is to be protected against
absorbing or losing water. The seal will be punctured automatically in
the oven in order to allow the purge gas to flow through the sample
vial.
– Place the cap securely on the sample vial. It seals the vial in the oven Sample vial
and prevents the purge gas from leaking. As long as they are tight, the
caps can be reused.
– Put the sample vials in the numbered spaces on the sample rack.
– Place the filled or empty sample vial for the blank determination into the Cap
position "Blank" of the sample rack.
– Place the sample vial with the insert for the blank determination into the
position "Drift" of the sample rack. Aluminum insert
(For Drift)

nk Drift
Bla

Sample rack Sample vial

Note
• Be sure to exclude any kind of side reaction due to elevated temperatures in the sample vials!
• Air contains oxygen, which could lead to decomposition at higher temperatures especially with organic
substances such as polymers.
• Use electrolyte and standard suitable for a sample coming out of an oven.
• After insertion into the oven, the heating of the sample vial will take several minutes. Amount and sample
type influence the heating time.

16 METTLER TOLEDO Stromboli

Putting into operation

5.3 During the sample series

The water of a sample is thermally released in the drying oven and then carried, by means of inert and dried
purge gas, to the titrator (KF titrator DL38 or KF coulometer DL39), where it is analyzed. The water content
of up to 13 samples, a blank value and a drift can be analyzed in one single sample series.
The sample vials are raised into the oven with a lift. The blue cap seals the sample
vial in the oven while a glass tube punctures the aluminum seal. The oven heats
the sample to the set temperature.

The purge gas now flows through the sample vial and transports the evaporated
water via the transfer tube to the titrator.

After the analysis, the lift with the sample vial is moved downwards out of the
oven.

5.4 After the sample series

If a new series is not started up immediately at the end of a sample series (e.g.
operation over night), we suggest the following:
– Press <Reset> key on the titrator. The Stromboli automatically returns to its idle position: oven switched
off, stop valve closed, no sample vial in the oven.

Do not touch the sample vials immediately after analysis. They can be very hot. Danger
of burns.
