1. Introduction
The METTLER TOLEDO oven sample changer Stromboli is a carrousel-type sample changer with an integrated
drying oven for automated analysis in titration. By following the heating of the sample with a Karl Fischer
titration, the water content of liquids and solids is determined. All important parameters are selected in the
method on the titrator.
The METTLER TOLEDO KF titrator DL38 (software version 2.0 or higher) and the METTLER TOLEDO KF
coulometer DL39 (software version 1.1 or higher) can control the Stromboli and analyze a sample se-
ries.
In these operating instructions, you can find all information necessary to correctly install and operate the
Stromboli with all the equipment included in the delivery. Instead of KF coulometer and KF titrator, the word
"titrator" is used to describe either. The DL39 is shown in the diagrams as an example.
In the operating instructions of the METTLER TOLEDO titrators DL38 and DL39, you will find all the informa-
tion pertaining to the setup, methods and auxiliary functions, so that you may perform sample series with
the Stromboli.
2. Safety measures
The oven sample changer Stromboli may only be operated by people trained in the use of the instruments
and corresponding chemicals. If the equipment is used in a manner not specified by the manufacturer, the
protection provided by the equipment may be impaired. The Stromboli has been tested for the experiments
and intended purposes documented in these operating instructions. However, this does not absolve you
from the responsibility of performing your own tests of the products supplied by us regarding their suitability
for the methods and purposes you intend to use them for. You should therefore observe the following safety
measures.
– Ensure that you plug the supplied power cable into an outlet that is grounded! Risk
of electric shock.
– Switch the instrument off and disconnect the power cable before you perform any
Risk of
manipulations on the instrument! Risk of electric shock.
electric shock
– Check the gas paths and drying tubes for free flow of gas! Danger of over- or
underpressure in the oven. Risk of explosion!
– Make sure, that the flowmeter is never closed completely. If due to malfunction
Risk of explo-
or false manipulation a sample vial cools down in the oven, an underpressure
sion is created. To avoid this underpressure, air can flow through the bypass valve.
Thus sucking in solvent or electrolyte from the titrator is prevented. Risk of explo-
sion!
– Never use reactive gases as a purge gas! Risk of explosion!
– In the determination of water contents of organic substances and when using
Caution ambient air as purge gas, ensure that no explosive gas mixtures can be formed!
Risk of explosion!
– Never work in an environment subject to explosion hazards! The housing of the
instrument is not gas tight. Risk of explosion due to spark formation! Corrosion
due to ingress of gases!
– When using chemicals and solvents, comply with the manufacturers instruc-
tions and the general lab safety rules!
– To perform sample series you must always place an empty glass vial between
the last measured sample vial and the subsequent blank vial when running a
series with increasing temperatures and different samples. For example, tem-
perature ramp such as MT methods M396 (C30) and M313 (V30).
Caution
If there is no empty glass vial between the sample and the blank vial, the
subsquent temperature is first achieved in the last vial (sample) before moving
the next vial to the oven. This can lead to decomposition if the last sample is
thermally instable.

Each sample is in a sample vial. The blue cap on the sample vial serves as a seal for the vial in the oven.

The heating temperature (max. 300 °C), as well as all the parameters neces-
sary for the automatic analysis are entered on the DL38 (METTLER method
"910 Stromboli") or the DL39 (METTLER method "912 Stromboli"). Starting
this method begins the automatic analysis of a sample series.
You have the option of working with inert gas (nitrogen, helium, argon, etc.) or ambient air as purge gas. The
instrument is equipped with an efficient two-stage purge gas drying system (e.g., silica gel and molecular
sieve). A built-in flowmeter regulates the flow of gas. A transfer tube is included in the delivery for the transfer
of gas from the drying oven to the titrator. An optional heatable transfer tube is available.
4. Installation
For correct installation and proper operation, the following points need to be observed:
• Place the titrator, Stromboli and drying unit in a clean, dry and dust-free place.
• Before operation, all parts of the instrument must have reached ambient temperature to prevent condensa-
tion.
• All parts must be dry before operation.

In the case of a sudden system fault, or if <Reset> is pressed, the stop valve automatically shuts off the
carrier gas flow and vents the system. This prevents the KF solution from flowing back into the system.
Immersion depth
The gas inlet of the transfer tube should be immersed in the solvent of the DL38 resp. in the electrolyte of
the DL39, to the same depth as the electrode.
Complete tube connections between the titrator, the Stromboli and the drying unit
After you have installed all instruments and parts correctly, you can start the Stromboli as follows:
– Turn on the power switch on the Stromboli. The
instrument is initialized automatically. The green Green LED (Power)
LED on the top side of the Stromboli lights up.
Note Red LED (Error)
If the red LED lights up, the instrument is malfunction-
ing (see "6. Error messages and malfunctions").

Note
While a Stromboli is attached to a titrator and switched on, each titration
is started automatically, regardless of whether "Autostart" has been set to
"Yes" or "No". The Stromboli must be switched off for a KF method without
Stromboli!

Note
• Be sure to exclude any kind of side reaction due to elevated temperatures in the sample vials!
• Air contains oxygen, which could lead to decomposition at higher temperatures especially with organic
substances such as polymers.
• Use electrolyte and standard suitable for a sample coming out of an oven.
• After insertion into the oven, the heating of the sample vial will take several minutes. Amount and sample
type influence the heating time.
The purge gas now flows through the sample vial and transports the evaporated
water via the transfer tube to the titrator.
After the analysis, the lift with the sample vial is moved downwards out of the
oven.
Do not touch the sample vials immediately after analysis. They can be very hot. Danger
of burns.
7.1 Cleaning
Make sure no liquids enter the housing. The instrument is not waterproof.
– The housing and sample rack can be cleaned with a cloth moistened with either water or alcohol.
– The oven, sample vials and caps can be cleaned with ethanol.
– Dry all parts before reusing them.
– Disassemble and clean oven at regular intervals and when obviously contaminated (see below!).
Check the set operating voltage before switching on the instrument! The instrument may
suffer damage if the operating voltage does not match the line voltage.
7.3 Disposal
In conformance with the European Directive 2002/96/EC on Waste Electrical and Electronic
Equipment (WEEE) this device may not be disposed of in domestic waste. This also applies
to countries outside the EU, per their specific requirements.
