Part B: Marking and Assessment

(to be completed by Module Lecturer)
Assessment Task:

This assignment gives you the opportunity to explore the influence of safety management in
engineering organisations.

Select an event or events, which, due to a poor risk management caused a significant health and
safety incident or accident. Investigate the influence that the approach to risk management had in
the event, using and applying theory and literature and appropriate legislation.

Prepare a report critiquing the incident. Discuss the reasons for the accident, giving your view on
the failings that occurred. Discuss the approaches that you believe could have prevented the
event, giving reasons from literature and theory as to back this up.

Word count: 3000 words

Remember to engage with literature and critique it as you apply it and develop your own
conclusions from it.

It is important that the focus is on critique of theory and your analysis of the event. Please
avoid using a lot of your word count on describing the event and the conclusions of
others.

The lecture material gives you areas to explore, and it is expected you will explore these areas
and go beyond what has been covered in lectures in your own research.

Learning Outcomes to be assessed (as specified in the validated module descriptor

https://icis.southwales.ac.uk/ ):

Understand, manage, and critically apply the safety, health and environmental principles in the
engineering workplace

Grading Criteria:

The grade will be a combination of the following:

- Literature and case study research - 30%

- Critique of theory - 30%
- Application of theory - 30%
Presentation and referencing 10%
