INTRODUCTION

Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder affecting more than 21 million people
worldwide Schizophrenia causes psychosis and is associated with considerable disability and may
affect all areas of life including personal, family, social, educational, and occupational functioning.
Common experiences include hallucinations mostly involving hearing voices or seeing things that are
not there and delusions which involve having fixed, false beliefs.

While there is no cure for schizophrenia, research is leading to innovative and safer
treatments. Experts also are unraveling the causes of the disease by studying genetics, conducting
behavioral research, and using advanced imaging to look at the brain’s structure and function. These
approaches hold the promise of new, and more effective therapies (American Psychiatric
Association, 2020).
The WHO estimated that 154 million Filipinos suffer from depression, 1 million from
schizophrenia, and 15.3 million from substance use disorders, while 877,000 die due to suicide every
year (Department of Health, 2018).

Worldwide about 1 percent of the population is diagnosed with schizophrenia, and

approximately 1.2% of Americans (3.2 million) have the disorder. About 1.5 million people will be
diagnosed with schizophrenia this year around the world.

Schizophrenia is recognized as a major mental illness and is prevalent in approximately 1% of

the global population. Although the causes of schizophrenia are largely unknown, there is a strong
correlation between identified physiological and environmental markers and the development of the
disease. With this knowledge, mental health nurses can potentially contribute to the development of
strategies and approaches to complement current treatments, and therefore ensure improved
outcomes for mental health clients.
