EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The section modulus of a midship scantling or midship section can determine the
longitudinal strength of hull girder. In a midship region, the scantling and layout of the
structural members needed an accurate calculation based on a solid reference. The
improvement of the method always been carried out from year to year. This is due to the
maximum longitudinal bending moment is experienced by a hull girder within the
midship zone. Therefore, midship scantlings play a vital part from longitudinal
strength’s point of view, at the same time it depicts the structural layout depending on
the type of cargo that the ship is going to carry. Therefore, various midship section been
applied to different types of ship.
The midship scantling design had been made where the classification society’s
rules come into play. One of the strong regulation for this purpose is Lloyd’s Register,
Rules and Regulations for the ship’s classification. Lloyd’s Rules has a specialized
formula to calculate the midship scantling. The scantling is the dimension of all the
structural members of the ship such as plates, stiffeners, girders, beams, pillars and et
cetera. Then, the drawing of the midship scantlings are being prepared according to the
calculated scantlings to show the overall view and position of the scantlings at the
midship region.
The calculation of the scantlings had been carried out in this report by
determining the size of frame spacing first. The frame spacings of size 700 mm, 1000
mm and 1500 mm had been chosen to calculate the scantlings on the midship section for
10000 deadweight-tonnage general cargo. After proceeding all the sufficient procedures
and all the size of scantlings had been determined, the strength assessment can be made.
From the strength assessment, the safety factor for all frame spacing can be obtained. In
this report, the value of safety factor obtained for 700 mm, 1000 mm and 1500 mm of
frame spacing are 1.67, 2.04 and 2.73 respectively. Last but not least, the safety factor
values for these three frame spacing are acceptable since the safe range for the safety
factor lies between 1.0 and 10.0.
