Include the sources and a brief description of each.
Evaluating
1. Provide for and against the significance of the Anzac memorials to Modern Day Australians .
Why the memorials ARE significant: Anzac memorials commemorate and are there to remember the sacrifice of
the people that died as a result of the battle at Gallipoli in 1915. Contrary to the name, the Anzac memorials are
not only to remember the happenings of the Gallipoli battle, but to remember and commemorate the deaths of all
Australians in military operations. This allows people of other nations to also develop new relationships with
Australians as they are also connected in ways to the wars commemorated in the memorials. Even though the
Gallipoli campaign is considered a ‘military failure’, the qualities shown by the soldiers at the time were what
laid down the foundation of Australian military action in modern times and even are known as the defining
characteristics of Australian people to this day. Memorials allow those who are grieving to feel a sense of
purpose reassurance as well.
Why the memorials ARENT significant: Anzac Day memorials glorify war, in the way that they make it seem
that war is a good thing that should be celebrated but commemorating the lives lost in them. It may also not be
significant in the way that people may not know much about the Anzac legend, so they generally don’t celebrate
or talk about what happened at Gallipoli in 1915 because they simply don’t understand it.
2. Propose (3) reasons why the Anzac memorials are important to Modern Day Australians
- The younger generation - A lot of the soldiers who were part of the battle were young and had little to
no war experience. During the eight-month battle, these young soldiers displayed immense bravery,
endurance and companionship with their fellow soldiers and these characteristics are extremely evident
in today’s Australian society. Many young Australians and New Zealanders take inspiration and look
up to these fallen soldiers as role-models, enlisting in the Army even now and taking part in Anzac Day
memorials.
- Family - Family of soldiers who served in WWI also have more a connection to Anzac Day, as the
people that would have served in the war would be only 3-4 generations away from the people around
today. In families many stories and information would be passed down through generations, keeping
the Anzac Day legend alive for generations to come. Those who are grieving get a sense of recognition
and reassurance in the memorials as well.
-
4. Reflect on how you could have minimised those issues and improve your action plan.
