1. A 3.56g sample of iron powder was heated in gaseous chlorine, and 10.39g of an iron
chloride was formed. What is the percent composition of this compound?
2. Coal from a colliery contains 2.7% water. After drying, the “moisture free” residue
contains 69.4% carbon. Determine the percentage of carbon on “wet basis”.
3. The compound Al2O3 contains 53% metal. What is the relative atomic atomic mass of
aluminium?
4. Calculate the percent composition of CaSO4, that is, the percent by mass of each element
in the compound.
5. How many mole of H2SO4 molecules are in 27.0g H2SO4? Hence, calculate the number
of atoms of H, S and O contained in H2SO4.
6. What volume of glycerine, C3H8O3, density 1.26g/ml, should be taken to obtain 2.50mol
of glycerine?
7. A forensic scientist analyzes a drug and finds that it contains 80.22% carbon and 9.62%
hydrogen. Could the drug be pure tetrahydrocannabinol (C21H30O2)?
8. A certain fertilizer is advertised to contain 10.5% K2O. What percentage of the fertilizer
is potassium?
9. Cobalt (Co) is a metal that is added to steel to improve its resistance to corrosion.
Calculate both the number of moles in a sample of cobalt containing 5.00 ×1020 atoms
and the mass of the sample.
10. For the following reaction,
2NaOH + H2SO4 −→ Na2SO4 + 2H2O
(a) How many moles of NaOH would react with 0.250 mol H2SO4? How many moles of
Na2SO4 would be produced?
(b) If 0.250 mol of H2SO4 and 0.750 mol NaOH were mixed, how much NaOH would
react?
(c) If 24.5 g H2SO4 and 30.0 g NaOH were mixed, how many grams of Na2SO4 would be
produced?
11. Define the following terms: yield, theoretical yield, actual yield.
12. The electrolysis of water forms H2 & O2.
2H2O  2H2 + O2
(a) Give the percent yield of O2 if 12.3 g O2 is produced from the decomposition of 14 g
H2O? Actual yield is given: 12.3 g O2.
(b) Calculate theoretical yield.
13. 70 g of MnO2 + 3.5 mol HCl gives a 42% yield. How many g of Cl2 is produced?
14. What mass of CO2 can be produced by the complete combustion of 2.00 kg of octane,
C8H18, a major component of gasoline, in 8.00 kg of oxygen?
15. Calculate the final concentration if 3.00 L of 4.00 M NaCl and 4.00 L of 2.00 M NaCl are
mixed.
16. What is the percent by mass of NaCl in 1.60 M NaCl solution? Assume that the solution
has a density of 1.06 g/mL.
