THE INVERSE, CONVERSE AND CONTRAPOSITIVE OF AN IF-THEN
STATEMENT
Background Information for Learners
Conditional statement is a statement that can be expressed in If-then statement. This
statement is in the form “If 𝒑 , then 𝒒.” It has two parts. One part begins with if, and the other part
begins with then. The part following the word if is called the hypothesis, and the part following
the word then is called the conclusion.
If-then statement can also be written in three different ways. These are the inverse,
converse and contrapositive forms.
To easily rewrite a statement in its inverse, converse and contrapositive forms, use the
following as reference:
Consider the statement: If 𝒑 , then 𝒒.
i. Inverse: If not 𝒑, then not 𝒒.
ii. Converse: If 𝒒 then 𝒑.
iii. Contrapositive: If not 𝒒, then not 𝒑.
Inverse
To write the inverse of a conditional statement, simply negate both the hypothesis and
conclusion.
Example 1.
Conditional statement: If you drink Sprite, then you obey your thirst.
Inverse: If you don’t drink Sprite, then you don’t obey your thirst.
Example 2.
Conditional statement: If it is a right angle, then its measure is 900.
Inverse: If it’s not a right angle, then its measure is not 900.
Example 3.
Conditional statement: If you do your homework, then you will pass in Mathematics.
Inverse: If you don’t do your homework, then you will not pass in Mathematics.
Converse
To write the converse of a conditional statement, simply interchange the hypothesis and
the conclusion. That is, the 𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒏 part becomes the 𝒊𝒇 part.
Example 1.
Conditional statement: If you drink Sprite, then you obey your thirst.
Converse: If you obey your thirst, then you drink Sprite.
Example 2.
Conditional statement: If it is a right angle, then its measure is 900.
Converse: If the measure of an angle is 900, then it is a right angle.
Example 3.
Conditional statement: If you do your homework, then you will pass in Mathematics.
Converse: If you will pass in Mathematics, then you do your homework.
Contrapositive
To form the contrapositive of a conditional statement, first get its inverse. Then,
interchange its hypothesis and conclusion.
Example 1.
Conditional statement: If you drink Sprite, then you obey your thirst.
Inverse: If you don’t drink Sprite, then you don’t obey your thirst.
Contrapositive: If you don’t obey your thirst, then you don’t drink Sprite.
Example 2.
Conditional statement: If it is a right angle, then its measure is 900.
Inverse: If it’s not a right angle, then its measure is not 900.
Contrapositive: If the measure of an angle is not 900, then it is not a right angle.

Example 3.
Conditional statement: If you do your homework, then you will pass in Mathematics.
Inverse: If you don’t do your homework, then you will not pass in Mathematics.
Contrapositive: If you will not pass in Mathematics, then you don’t do your homework.

Learning Competency
Determines the inverse, converse, and contrapositive of an if-then statement (M8GE-IIg-1)
Exercise 1
Direction: Write the inverse of the following conditional statement.
1. If something is a dog, then it is an animal.
2. If it is Monday, then I go to school.
3. If the Sun rises in the east, then it sets in the west.
4. If I study, then I will pass the test.
5. If the sum of two angles is 1800, then the angles are supplementary.

Exercise 2
Direction: Write the converse of the following conditional statement.
1. If something is a dog, then it is an animal.
2. If it is Monday, then I go to school.
3. If the Sun rises in the east, then it sets in the west.
4. If I study, then I will pass the test.
5. If the sum of two angles is 1800, then the angles are supplementary.

Exercise 3
Direction: Write the contrapositive of the following conditional statement.
1. If something is a dog, then it is an animal.
2. If it is Monday, then I go to school.
3. If the Sun rises in the east, then it sets in the west.
4. If I study, then I will pass the test.
5. If the sum of two angles is 1800, then the angles are supplementary.
