Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and evaluated by the Development and
Quality Assurance Teams of SDO TAPAT to assist you in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also
need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks
included in the module.
For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided
and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be helped to process the
contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.
The following are some reminders in using this module:
1. Use the module with care.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let’s Try before moving on to the other activities included in the
module.
3. Read the instruction carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and in checking your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.

Activity 2. Geometry in Nature

The Philippines is one of the worlds' great reservoirs of more than 1,700 species and
subspecies of butterflies. This makes our country an important sanctuary of these winged
jewels. Butterflies have a special place in Mathematics. Its pair of wings show patterns with
geometric shapes and structure.

A. Closely look and study the wings of the butterfly and answer the following
questions below.

Are the pair of wings of the butterfly CONGRUENT? ____________________________

If yes, explain how they are congruent? _____________________________________
How important that their wings are congruent? _________________________________
B. Taking the triangle parts from the wings of the butterfly, use the correspondence to match

Did you understand what it means to be congruent? Did you all get the
correspondence of angles and sides?
Let us learn more about congruence as we study it with TRIANGLES. We are to
illustrate triangle congruence and more of its postulates in the next lesson.

Let’s Elaborate

ILLUSTRATION OF TRIANGLE CONGRUENCE

In Geometry, congruence is used to express identical in form. Two objects or shapes

are said to be congruent if their line segments are with the same length and angles have the
same measures. Butterfly wings is a model of congruent triangles with the same size and
shape.

CORRESPONDING CONGRUENT PARTS

Suppose we have a measurement of the wings, let us use correspondence ( ) to
match up the parts.

Each triangle has corresponding parts: 3 corresponding angles and 3 corresponding sides.

Since the corresponding parts of FLY are congruent to the corresponding parts of
∆ ERS, then we can say that FLY is congruent to ∆ ERS We can write the congruence
statement as FLY ∆ ERS.

Definition of Congruent Triangles (CPCTC)

If two triangles are congruent, then the three corresponding sides and
three corresponding angles are congruent.

CPCTC stands for Corresponding Parts of Congruent Triangles are Congruent.

Did you understand the definition of congruent triangles? Let us try to check your
understanding through the Guided Practice.

Answers:
1. True. It is correct because all the corresponding vertices of the triangles are named in the
same order.
2. False. It is not correct because the corresponding vertices of the triangles are named in a
different order. By matching the vertices, C does not correspond to S and N does not
correspond to I.
3. True. It is correct because all the corresponding vertices of the triangle are named in the
same order.
4. True. It is correct because the vertices match up to its corresponding vertices.
5. True. It is correct because the sides match up to its corresponding sides

ILLUSTRATION OF SAS, ASA, AND SSS

CONGRUENCE POSTULATES

If we are to prove two congruent triangles, it would be difficult using all the
corresponding parts (3 corresponding angles and 3 corresponding sides). Fortunately, we
have postulates to simplify the proving of the congruency of two triangles. We will explore
more other methods in proving congruent triangles by using the 3 postulates.
