American Colonization

 From one colonizer to another – after more than three centuries of Spanish rule, the
Americans came. They set out to conquer the Filipinos through education and
governance – the public school system and a system of government.
 With the establishment of public schools, there was an increase in demand for
illustrations and cartoons for books and publications. With the influx of new
corporations, advertising and commercial design were in demand and were
incorporated in the curriculum of fine arts schools.
Fabian Dela Rosa
 Don Fabián de la Rosa y Cueto was a Filipino painter. He was the uncle and mentor to
the Philippines' national artist in painting, Fernando Amorsolo. He is regarded as a
"master of genre" in Philippine art.
 Subdued colors- without the use of bright colors. (muted colors)
 Best remembered for painting landscapes, portraits, and everyday scenes with
women depicted as simple yet regal in doing daily activities such as cleaning out clay
pots, weaving, chatting, going to church, planting in the rice fields, washing clothes,
etc.

the process of self-discovery and self-awareness.
Fernando Amorsolo
 He was the Philippines’ first National Artist and is officially recognized as the “Grand
Old Man of Philippine Art”. Renowned for his trademark luminosity and ability to
render the iconic provincial Filipina, Amorsolo’s paintings usually feature scenes in
glowing rural landscapes--- such as farmers ankle-deep in rice fields, women in colorful
baro’t sayas sorting through mangoes, and vibrant society portraits.
 Amorsolo is best known for his illuminated landscapes, which often portrayed
traditional Filipino customs, culture, fiestas and occupations.
PAINTINGS
 The 'Planting Rice with Mayon Volcano, Exhibits the happiness across from the
difficulties in planting rice. The Filipino Villagers in their bright clothes and straw hats
plant together with a fresh and green landscape of plenty. behind the Filipino villagers is
the peaceful flume of steam.
 The “Dalagang Bukid” or the maiden in the rice field shows a medium brown-skinned
woman portraying the Maria Clara image. ... Hence, her shoulder gave emphasis on the
way women dressed which attempted to depict Filipino conservative demeanor that
every Filipina must possess during the American colonial period.
Ginebra San Miguel
 Amorsolo designed the logo for Ginebra San Miguel (Markang Demonyo) depicting St.
Michael vanquishing the devil.
 Ginebra San Miguel, is a gin with an intriguing label—one that depicts a triumphant
angel expelling (or perhaps slaying) a demon. it's one of the most popular gins in the
Philippines
Ireneo Miranda
Miranda was hailed as the Dean of Philippine Cartoonists but he also produced a number of oil
paintings. The National Fine Arts Collection has in its custody, a number of works of the artist in
this medium.
Tausug Princess
 This artwork can be viewed in our gallery featuring the early 20th century Filipino
portraiture at the National Museum of Fine Arts.
 In this painting, former Senator Santanina Tillah Rasul was portrayed while she was in
her early twenties wearing the Tausug traditional clothing ensemble called batawi,
which is a blouse worn during special occasions, and the skirt or sawwal. The long shawl
draped across her shoulder is the habul tiyahian.
 Behind her is a woman holding a kudyapi (a two-stringed, fretted boat-lute that
belongs to the Maranao and not the Tausug). A painting of farmers working the field
which can be partially seen behind her, which he probably also created.
 In its formal quality, this portrait maybe considered conservative in style, applied with
rich and vibrant colors while the subject sits reposed. Miranda completed this painting
a year before the sitter graduated cum laude at the UP with a degree in Political Science.
Jorge Pineda
 Jorge Pineda was a Filipino artist known for his depictions of daily life and nationalist
content. His work, painted with loose, visible brushstrokes and vibrant colors presented
an idealized vision of life in the Philippines through images of military victories,
children playing, and women performing domestic chores.
Diosdado Lorenzo
Lorenzo (1906 - 1983) was active/lived in Italy, Philippines. Diosdado Lorenzo is known for
Painting; expressionist landscapes. A painting could fix a scene in memory, and a masterpiece
could be a means to immortality. Diosdado Lorenzo believes that art is timeleless. He is
committed to his favorite subject matter which are rural landscapes.
Guillermo rolentinto
Was a Filipino sculptor and a professor of the UP . H
e was designated as the National artist for sculpture In 1973.
Up oblation – it depicts a man facing upwards with arm outstretched symbolizes selfless
offering of oneself to his country. a symbol of strength resilience and freedom of thought for up
and its graduates.
