Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
Background of the Study
Family is the basic institution for the development of their children. It plays a vital role in
nurturing and developing good habits, values and attitudes that are necessary to be successful in
the near future. In fact, parental participation improves student learning whether the child is in
preschool or in the upper grades. As children grow older, the methods and expectations for
family involvement must change and continue to evolve until graduation. Indeed, teenage years
are portrayed as stressful for both parents and teens. As research shows, that teens undergo a lot
of developmental adjustment that could affect their relationships to their parents and somehow,
could end up to a conflict. However, children who spent more of their growing with their parents
received better guidance and attention that protect them from engaging in socially unwanted and
negative behaviors.
In fact, our school is considered our second home, thus, the basic foundation of
knowledge being imparted to the child happened. Spending eight long hours every day filled
with different people of different ages and values. Nonetheless, school is highly important where
your characters and your talents evolved. Hence, As Steinberg (2002) states that 86% of general
public believe that a support from parents is the most important way to improve the schools.
Indeed, the more parents participate in every level, the better the student achievement.
Moreover, three decades of research have demonstrated that parental involvement
significantly contributes in a variety of ways, to improve student outcomes related to learning
and school success. These findings have remained fairly consistent despite the fact that families
have undergone significant changes during that time, and schools (Drake, 2000). It was
supported that the parental support or involvements in the child’s development throughout all
years motivate children to be successful (Context and Organization, 2005).
The researcher will conduct this study to determine the effects of supportive parents to
the academic performance of Grade 10 students of MMCA. Thus, the researcher is interested in
conducting this study because of the fact that parents greatly affect child’s performance in their
school. Also, parents can benefit from how understanding their parenting styles provides a basis
for many healthy developmental outcomes during adolescence.
Statement of the Problem
The study will aim to determine the effects of supportive parents to the academic
performance.
Specifically, this will aim to answer the following questions.
1. What is the demographic profile of the respondent?
1.1 Gender of the student
1.2 Living with single parent
1.3 Living with both parent
2. What is the parenting style used by the parent?
2.1 Authoritarian Style
2.2 Authoritative Style
2.3 Permissive Style
2.4 Uninvolved Style
3. Do the parents motivate their children?
4. How frequent the child involved in the school activities?
5. Is there any significant relationship between supportive parents to the
academic performance of Grade 10 students of Mt. Moriah Christian
Academy (MMCA)?
Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between supportive parents to the academic
performance of Grade 10 students of MMCA.
Conceptual Framework
Supportive Parents Academic Performance
1. Type of Parenting Styles
2. Parental Motivation
3. School Involvement
Fig 1: The figure shows the effects of supportive parents to the academic performance in
terms of parenting styles, parental motivation and school involvement.
Definition of Terms
The following terms are operationally used defined according to their use in the study.
Academic Performance – it pertains to the ability of a student to perform well in the school.
Parental Motivation – it refers on how the parents encouraged his/her children to do well in the
school.
Parenting Style - it represents the standard strategies that parents use in their child rearing. It
consists of four different styles such as Authoritative style, Authoritarian style, Permissive style
and Uninvolved style.
School Involvement – it pertains to those school activities wherein the students can participate
(e.g. Quiz Bee Contest, Sports fest etc.)
Supportive Parents – it refers to those parents who are concern and caring to their children
especially when it comes to their academic performance.
Scope and Delimitations
The study will be only focused on the effects of supportive parents to the academic
performance of grade 10 students. This will be conducted on Mt. Moriah Christian Academy
(MMCA). The respondents will be coming from Grade 10 students and currently enrolled during
the school year of 2013-2014.
