Gamelan (Indonesia) – ensemble composed of several indigenous instruments,

orchestra of 4-25 musicians and singers.


Javanese Gamelan – refined, mellow, soft and connected (traditional)
Balinese Gamelan – rhythmic, vigorous and brightly
Gongs:
Gong Ageng – largest, low pitch
Gong Siyem – medium, higher pitch
Kempul – small gongs

Kettle gongs:
Kenong – small, deep-tuned gong
Kethuk – single kettle gong, “thuk” sound

Kempyang – two kettle gong, “pyang” sound

Bonang Barung – dozen kettle gong

Bonang Panerus – higher octave set than barung, fast melodic pattern
Metallophones:
Saron Demung – biggest, lowest sound, 6 or 7 thick metallic keys

Gender Slenthem – wooden frame, 6 or 7 wide, thin metallic keys

Gender Barung – 12-14 narrow, thin metal keys, octave higher than slenthem

Gambang Kayu – xylophone, 17-23 keys


Zithers:
Celempung – angled towards the player, 4 legs, 20-26 metal strings

Siter – small zither, 10-26 metal strings

Rebab – spike fiddle with two strings, played vertically


Aerophones:
Suling – end-blown bamboo flute, played at the end of melodic phrase

Percussion instruments:
Kendhang Gendhing – largest hand-played drum w/ two heads
Kendhang Ciblon – middle-sized barrel-shaped drum, accentuates the dancer
Kendhang Ketipung – smallest barrel-shaped drum

Bedhug – large stick-beaten barrel drum, played to welcome guests
