LAB ACTIVITY: Gas Law Computer Simulation

1. What are the initial conditions of the gas? (after opening the software)

P = 1atm V = 800L T = 325K RMS* (m/s) = 1644 m/s

* RMS stands for “Root Mean Square.” It is a measurement of the speed of the particles in a gas. In this
activity we simply call this value “speed.”

2. Lock the volume at that value (click the lock).

3. Lower the temperature to 100 K.

4. What is the new pressure? 0.31atm What is the new speed? 912 m/s

5. Describe what happens to the speed of particles in a gas if the temperature drops:
As the temperature drops, the particles inside the container cools and as the result, the particles loses
energy and slow down.

6. Why does a lower speed of the particles reduce the pressure?

The particles does not lose energy even it is constantly colliding with each other, but if the temperature
drops, it will began to lose energy. As the particles slows down, the amount of collisions against the container
will decrease, so does the pressure.

7. Raise the temperature to 400 K. What is the new pressure? 1.23atm

8. Based upon the results above, what is the relationship between the absolute temperature (Kelvin
temperature) and the pressure of a gas if the volume remains the same?
Temperature and pressure are proportional with each other that is why, if there’s an increase with one,
so does to another.

9. Which gas law was observed after manipulating the temperature?

As the gas law states that temperature and pressure are proportional with one another meaning, if the
temperature increase/decrease, so does with the pressure.
