CONVERSION OF OCTAL TO DECIMAL NUMBER SYTEM

Learning Activity Sheet

Conversion of octal to decimal is defined as converting a number from base-8 to base-10. All
the digits in an octal number system are from the range of 0 to 7, while all the digits in a
decimal number system are from the range of 0 to 9.

Convert Octal to Decimal

Example: Convert 26718 to Decimal

Step 1. Convert the given number to decimal.

2671 = 2 x 8 3 + 6 x 82 + 7 x 81 + 1 x 80
= 2 x 512 + 6 x 64 + 7 x 8 + 1 x 1
= 1024 + 384 + 56 + 1
= 1465

Thus: 26718 = 146510

Convert Octal to Decimal with Decimal Point

To convert an octal number to a decimal number with a decimal point, follow the same
procedures in converting octal numbers to decimal numbers. However, the power of
exponents of 8 will vary after the decimal point. Since we are moving towards the right hand
side with the exponents increasing, the exponents after the decimal point will decrease or it
becomes negative.

Example: Convert 761.128 to Decimal

Step 1. Write 761.128 with the powers of 8. Start from the right hand side. In this
example, the powers of 8 will be negative after the decimal point.

761.128 = (7 x 82) + (6 x 81) + (1 x80) + (1 x 8-1) + (2 x 8-2)

= (7 x 64) + (6 x 8) + (1 x1) + (1 x 1/81) + (2 x 1/82)
= 448 + 48 + 1 + 0.125 + 0.03125
= 497.15625

Therefore: 761.128 = 497.1562510
