CNC Dispersion
by ultra-sonication and subsequent particle size analysis
PRODUCT INFORMATION

Product Group Nanoparticles

Trade Name Cellulose Nanocrystal
CAS Number 9004-34-6
Product Number NG01NC0101

1. Purpose: Redispersion of dried aggregated cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) in water followed by

elimination of any remaining aggregates by ultra-sonication.

2. Materials and equipment:

1) Redispersion of dried cellulose nanocrystals
• Cole-Parmer 500W Ultrasonic processor, 0.5’’ diameter probe tip (ANNEX 1)
• 250 mL beaker
• Magnetic stir bar
• Analytical balance
• Samples of dried cellulose nanocrystals
• Deionized water
2) Particle size analysis by dynamic light scattering
• Malvern Zetasizer Nano ZS
• 10 mM sodium chloride solution
• 12 mm polystyrene plastic cuvettes with stoppers (DTS0012)
• 50 mL beaker
• Magnetic stir bar
• Deionized water
• 10 ml syringe (optional)
• 0.7 μm Whatman GF/F syringe filter (optional)

3. Safety considerations:
• Wear proper respiratory protection when handling the powdered materials (see SDS).

4. Instructions

1) Redispersion step

• This procedure can be used for dispersions up to 3% concentration although it is written for
1% concentration.

• Place 1 g. of dried cellulose nanocrystals in the beaker.

• Add water until the total weight is 100 g. (1 wt. % suspension).

• Stir the suspension until no solid material is visible. This step can typically take between 30
minutes and an hour depending on the form of the dry CNC.

2) Aggregate elimination step

• When Step 1 is complete, centre the sonication probe in the liquid volume.

• Apply the sonication treatment (80% amplitude) until an energy value of 5000 Joules per g.
of solid CNC is reached (typically between 1 and 2 minutes depending on probe surface condition).

3) Particle size analysis

• Dilute the CNC suspension to 0.1 wt. % using deionized water to achieve a final suspension
weight of 20 g.

• To the diluted cellulose nanocrystal suspension, add 20 g. of the 10 mM sodium chloride

suspension and stir for 10 minutes.

• Place the volume designated by the equipment manufacturer of the prepared suspension
into the cuvette for analysis. You may use the 0.7 μm filter to remove dust or other solid
contaminants that may interfere with the analysis.

• Run the particle size measurement, using the refractive index/viscosity values of water for
the dispersant phase and using a refractive index of 1.53 for the cellulose particles.
