Part C: Short Answers [8 questions; 27 marks]

1. Bacteria were cultured in a system that allowed for the continual addition of fresh nutrients and the
removal of waste products. Bacteriophage (virus) were added at the time shown on the graph below
and the following population changes were observed.

a) What was the effect of bacteriophage on the bacteria? (1 mark)

b) Explain why the virus population decreased after an initial increase in population? (2 marks)

3
2. The graph below shows the activities of enzymes J and I at different temperatures.

a) Why did the reaction rate for enzyme J drop when the temperature exceeded the optimal
temperature (50ºC)? (1 mark)

b) Could enzyme I be an enzyme found in the human body?

Why or why not? (1 mark)

3. The graph below shows the activities of enzymes K, L and M at different pH’s.

a) What is the optimal pH for enzyme L? (1 mark)

b) Which letter represents the activity of an enzyme that could be

found in the stomach? (1 mark)

c) Why does enzyme activity decrease when the pH is higher or lower than the optimal pH? (1
mark)

4. Discuss the role of the cell membrane in the movement of materials through it by each of the
following processes and provide an example of each.

a) Active transport (2 marks)

b) Passive transport (2 marks)

4
5. The diagrams to the right show three microscopic
fields containing red blood cells. Arrows
indicate the direction of net water movement.

a) Which microscopic field shows a hypertonic

environment? (1 mark)

b) Why is it important for blood plasma to be isotonic to the cytoplasm of red blood cells? (2
marks)

6. Fred has type AB blood, Wilma has type B blood, and Pebbles, their daughter has type A blood.
Betty has type B blood, Barney has type A blood, and their son BamBam has type O blood. In the
bloodiest fight ever witnessed in Bedrock, Barney accused Betty of having an affair with Fred.
Barney also claimed that Fred is BamBam’s father, citing evidence from the new field of
Geneticsrock. Could Barney be right? Could Fred be BamBam’s father? Support your answer. (3
marks)

7. In cattle, red colour is incompletely dominant to white colour. The heterozygous condition
produces roan (pinkish) cows. A dominant gene results in a deep notch in each ear, while the un-
notched trait is recessive. A certain roan un-notched bull is crossed with a white, heterozygous,
notched cow.

a) Construct a Punnett Square to show the above cross. (3 marks)

b) What is the probability of producing a white, notched calf? (1 mark)

c) What is the probability of producing a roan, un-notched calf? (1 mark)

5
8. The gene for achondroplastic dwarfism is controlled by the dominant gene (A), where normal
stature is recessive (a). A homozygous dominant dwarf gene combination is deadly, the fetus is
stillborn. The gene for colour blindness is a recessive X-linked trait. A normal vision dwarf
female whose father was colour blind has a child with a man who is normal for both traits.

a) Construct a Punnett Square to show the above cross. (3 marks)

b) What is the probability of having a son who is colour blind and dwarf? (1 mark)
