1. Gamma Scintigraphy to Study Site of Drug Release Gamma scintigraphy is a technique commonly
used to track drug dosage form movement from one region to another within the Gl tract after oral admin-
istration.
Gamma scintigraphy also has many research applications and is widely used for formulation
studies, such as the mechanism of drug release from a hydrophilic matrix tablet
(Abrahamsson et al, 1998). Gamma-scintigraphy is applied extensively in the
development and evaluation of pharmaceutical drug delivery systems. It is used particularly for monitor-
ing formulations in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts. The radiolabeling is generally achieved by
the incorporation of an appropriate technetium- 99m or indium-111 labelled radiopharmaceutical into the
formulation.
