In mathematics, a percentage is a number or ratio that can be expressed as a fraction of 100. If we have to
calculate percent of a number, divide the number by the whole and multiply by 100. Hence, the
percentage means, a part per hundred. The word per cent means per 100. It is represented by the symbol
“%”.

Examples of percentages are:

10% is equal to 1/10 fraction

20% is equivalent to ⅕ fraction

25% is equivalent to ¼ fraction

50% is equivalent to ½ fraction

75% is equivalent to ¾ fraction

90% is equivalent to 9/10 fraction

Percentages have no dimension. Hence it is called a dimensionless number. If we say, 50% of a number,
then it means 50 per cent of its whole.

Percentages can also be represented in decimal or fraction form, such as 0.6%, 0.25%, etc. In academics,
the marks obtained in any subject are calculated in terms of percentage. Like, Ram has got 78% of marks
in his final exam. So, this percentage is calculated on account of the total marks obtained by Ram, in all
subjects to the total marks.
Let’s explore

A. Read

Norman got 90% of 60 items correct in a math test. How many correct items did he
get?

Find: 90% of 60 = n

Study:

90% of 60 = n Think: 90% = .90

.90 X 60 = 54. 00

Rate X Base Percentage n = 54

Answer: He got 54 items correct.

B. Fill in the missing numbers

1. 80% of 60 = n 2. 32% of 18 = n

______X 60 = ______ _____X 18 = _____

n = ______ n = ______

Rate is the comparison of the percentage to the base express in percent.

Base is the quantity that represents the whole

Percentage is the quantity which is a part of the base

Let’s try

Find the percentage, using decimals.

1. 15 % of 120 = n = 18 2. 20% of 300 = n = 60

3. 25% of 8 = n = 2

Remember
Percentage = Base X Rate or P = B X R
ACTIVITY

I. Find the percentage, using decimals. Show your solutions.

1. 60% of 50 = n = 30 2. 75% of 40 = n = 30

1
3. 12 % of 60=n = 15/12 = 7 ½ = 7.5 4. 35% of 60 = n = 261/100 = 2 61/100 = 2.61
2

1
5. 33 % of 90=n = 30 6. 50% of 90 = n = 45
3

7. 15% of 40 = n = 6 8. 10 % 75 = n = 15/12 = 7 ½ = 7.5

9. 100% of 75 = n = 75 10. 5% of 20 = n = 1

II. Solve.

1. Three hundred fifty grade six pupils were in the list of NEAT examinees. On the day of the
examination, 98% of the pupils took the test. How many pupils took the test? How many pupils were
absent?

343 Grade six students took the examination

7 Grade six students were absent

98/100 of 350 = 98100 × 350

2. If eighty percent of the pupils who took the NEAT examination got passing scores, how many pupils
got passing scores? How many did not?

280 pupils got passing scores

63 pupils didn’t get passing scores

80/100 of 350 = 80100 × 350
