UNDERSTANDING THE SELF (PSY 1A)

ACTIVITY #1: WHAT’S IN A NAME?

In my point of view, a name is a set of words by which someone and something can identify
even animals. It’s also provides the identity of a person which people refer towards a person for
communication or in any other work required. A name also has various aspects like some our nick names
that are given by our loved ones. And some of the other name is permanent that we used in some
important document which the whole world could identify us a person.

Complete the following statements:

 I was given my name because . . . my mother inspired by the 34 th US President Dwight

Eisenhower. When I was a child, she told me that she gave me that name because she thinks
that I would become a good leader someday.

 I like/dislike my name because . . . I like my name because I am the only one who has named
“Dwight” in our Barangay. So I thought that it was unique maybe because some people aren’t
familiar and they didn’t know how to pronounce it and it really makes me laugh sometimes but
in all of that I always think that there’s a reason behind my name.

 My name is/isn’t a good fit for my personality because . . . my name is really good fit for my
personality because I can define my name “Dwight “being a determinate, hardworking person
and ready for those challenges that comes in my life. So that I can be an inspiration to other
people to keep on going no matter what happens.

Reflections:
 How do your names relate to your identities?

I think because my name would be a part of my personality as a person and also people will be
going to identify and describe me every time they heard my name they always say that I am so kind. it
also related to my identity being a person because of the values that I have.

 What might your name tell others about your identity?

Every time people heard my name, they always confused to it because they are not familiar but
when someone say that “SK Councilor” they know me. So having a name will have a significant
contribution to our everyday life because I think that through our name, people will be going to identify
us and to describe us for who we are as a member of the society as well.

 What stories about you or your family might your name reflect?

Well, my mother died when I was just 3 years old, and my father left me and my sister because
maybe he can’t move on from what happen. Then my sister gets married in early age. So since then, I
considered myself as an independent person. Even though we separated, we always showing our love to
each other. So I think that my name reflects our story that no matter how many challenges we are
facing, we always choose to keep on going especially me, I am a working student and I know that it’s
hard for me sometimes but I always think my dreams not just for myself but for my family.
