REASON OF RIZAL’S TRAVEL ABROAD

To pursue further studies abroad

To observe medicine practices

To finish his novel el filibusterismo

To publish a book exposing the Colonial relationship of Spain and the Philippines

ROOT CAUSE/REASON

He was forced to leave Dapitan due to threats to his life because of the publication of Noli Me
Tangere. After 3 years, he published El Filibusterismo. And this caused him being pressured by the
Spanish Authorities and by his family and friends to leave the country and avoid possible persecutions.
1. What do you think is the real purpose of Rizal’s leaving the Philippines?

For me, the real reason of Rizal, leaving this country, is to avoid the suspicions of the Spaniards to
grow and have his family (including his wife) be part of any more persecutions. He wants them to be
safe and not gather attention from the governor -general of the Spaniards.

FIVE MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES OF RIZAL DURING HIS JOURNEY

1. May 3, 1882 – this was his first travel abroad (to spain). He boarded the Salvadora via his
passport named Jose Mercado that was given/produced to him by Antonio Rivera, his uncle.
During his boarding in his 2nd boat, Djemnah, he had a dream that he returned to Calamba and
after meeting his parents who did not talk to him because of not having consulted them about
his first trip, he returned travelling with Php100 he again borrowed. He feels sad and heart
broken in his dream and then he woke up inside his cabin. And he has set foot on the European
ground at the City of Naples after 39 days of sailing.
2. August 20, 1882 – The article he wrote entitled, “Amor Patrio” that is also known as “Love of
Country” was published in the prestigious Manila newspaper Diariong Tagalog. This was his first
article written in abroad.
3. March 21, 1887 – Rizal has published Noli Me Tangere with the help of his friend, Dr. Maximo
Viola. This was the time that Rizal experienced poverty and Dr. Viola offered to sponsor the first
2000 copies of his book to be published.
4. Lastly is when he has graduated and has obtained his dream of becoming a doctor. Although he
hasn’t got any diploma, he was still able to fulfill his dreams and be able to operate his mother.
Also, when he got to master mason, since it is also part of his dreams to become a freemason.
