Introduction
• Both NFPA 70E, Article 110.5 Electrical Safety Program and
CSA Z462, Clause 4.1.7 Electrical Safety Program require that
the employer shall:
• “implement and document an overall Electrical Safety Program
that directs activity appropriate to the risk associated with
electrical hazards.”
• NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 provide a definition for an Electrical
Safety Program.
• “A documented system consisting of electrical safety principles,
policies, procedures, and processes that directs activities
appropriate for the risk associated with electrical hazards.”

Introduction
• The developed and implemented Electrical Safety Program
requires a policy related to the Energized Electrical Work Permit
(EEWP) requirement of NFPA 70E Article 130.2 or CSA Z462
Clause 4.3.2.

• In this webinar the requirement for an Energized Electrical Work

Permit (EEWP) will be reviewed.

What Is Energized
Electrical Work?
• “Working On” is defined in NFPA 70E and CSA Z462:
• Diagnostics.
• Repair.
• Additionally Consider:
• Operating electrical equipment is not maintenance.
Normal function of energized electrical equipment.
”Establishing an Electrically Safe Work Condition.”
• Isolation related work tasks. Racking in and out power
circuit breakers and installing temporary protective
grounds. “Establishing an Electrically Safe Work
Condition.”

Managing Myths &
Misinformation
• NFPA 70E’s and CSA Z462’s application has saved
lives and reduced risk. But there are many myths
and a lot of misinformation:
• It is against the law to work energized. Not true.
• Testing for absence of voltage doesn’t require arc flash
or shock PPE. Not true.
• Our company policy says it is Dangerous and No PPE
Exists for energized work greater than 40 cal/cm2
incident energy. False statement.
• I am the President of my electrical contracting
company, I emailed out a policy that ”we will not work
live!” We really don’t need any of this. Negligent. Not
true.

Managing Myths &
Misinformation
• All energized electrical equipment is inherently
high likelihood of having an arcing fault. Not true.
• Arc blast pressure will pulverize you! Not true.
• Operating energized electrical equipment requires
full body arc flash PPE to be worn at all times.
Not true.
• If I go in the Electrical Room I need full body arc
flash PPE to be worn just to go in. Not true.
• The Equipment Label for Arc Flash & Shock is on
the electrical equipment the Arc Flash Boundary is
real. Not true.

Energized Electrical
Work Permit
• An Energized Electrical Work Permit (EEWP) is
required when a Qualified Person will be exposed to
electrical shock or arc flash hazards.
• Therefore, all energized electrical work tasks
require an EEWP unless exempted.
• When an EEWP is required NFPA 70E/CSA Z462
identifies the information that should be documented
on the EEWP.
• NFPA 70E/CSA Z462 identify exemptions when
EEWP is not required.
• Qualified Person and must use safe work practices
and PPE in accordance with Chapter 1 of NFPA 70E
or CSA Z462 Clause 4.

Energized Electrical
Work Permit
• Justification for energized electrical work:
• Demonstrate de-energizing introduces additional hazards or
increased risk.
• Life support systems.
• Emergency alarm/security systems.
• Hazardous location ventilation for fugitive emission, de-classification.
• Infeasibility due to equipment design or operational limitations.
• Diagnostic and troubleshooting.
• Continuous process that would be completely shutdown.
• Equipment is operating at less than or equal to 30Vac or 60V
dc (2021).

Energized Electrical
Work Permit
• NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 EEWP Exemptions:
1. Testing, troubleshooting, or voltage or current
measurements.
2. Thermography, ultrasonic or visual inspections if
Restricted Approach Boundary for shock IS NOT
crossed.
3. Access and egress to an area with energized
electrical equipment if no electrical work is
performed and the Restricted Approach Boundary
is not crossed.
4. General housekeeping and misc. non-electrical
work task if the Restricted Approach Boundary is
not crossed.

Energized Electrical
Work Permit

• Interpret NFPA 70E/CSA Z462 documenting

your company’s specific policies, practices
and generic procedural requirements in your
Electrical Safety Program.
• With respect to the EEWP additional
exemptions can be defined based on
infeasibility due to equipment design.

Energized Electrical
Work Permit
• Consider additional EEWP Exemptions (have to
be documented in Company Electrical Safety
Program):
• Operating energized electrical equipment.
• Opening hinged doors.
• Removing bolt on covers for diagnostic work
task.
• Racking in or out power circuit breakers.
• Installing or removing Temporary Protective
Grounds.
• Battery terminations.

Conclusion

• Interpreting NFPA 70E and CSA Z462 is required

by the employer.
• Ensure you understand what energized electrical
work is.
• Manage myths and misinformation.
• Document your interpretation in a compliant
Electrical Safety Program, policies, practices and
procedural requirements.

Conclusion
• The Energized Electrical Work Permit (EEWP) is a
mandatory requirement of NFPA 70E or CSA Z462.
• As provided the EEWP has exemptions that would
apply.
• Not all energized work tasks require an EEWP.
• The EEWP is applied through a compliant
Electrical Safety Program policy.
• Additional exemptions can be documented by an
employer as policy in the employer’s Electrical
Safety Program.
