Question 6
Considering the recent accident and the many injuries recorder over the years a review
of the first-aid arrangements is necessary.
For a good response to the first aid cases proper First Aid Personnel need to be
appointed. The working arrangements in the warehouse 4 days on/off in two sifts
night/day indicates that a number minimum 4 First aiders is necessary. The number of FA
should be decided to meet and exceed legal requirements. The First aiders need to be
trained and certified by an authorised trainer. When new personnel are employed the job
requirements should include also the first aid training. The appointed personnel need to
know what emergency services to contact and the contact information’s. Information to
be posted in an area available to all workers.
The general risk level of the site should be taken in consideration as it is high in this case.
Recent accident showed that collisions are frequent causing fractures. Oil spills can
cause falls and bad housekeeping trips. To deal with this situation, several fully equipped
first aid kits should be placed in different locations, and first aid safety equipment should
also be available. Regular checks of First Aid Kids and equipment should be enforced.
Due to the high number of accidents, there should be sufficient equipment to support
multiple casualties at a time.
As the warehouse is a large work space a designated room for emergency treatment
should be used. The space should be easy access by local emergency teams. The room
should be clean, well ventilated and proper illumination provided.
In the same time should have proper equipment as wash facilities, chair for injured
personnel, bed if possible and prosper waste bins.
Distance of the hospital from the site, which in this case is 8 km, and the roads being in
good condition, is advantageous for this business, because the emergency services can
arrive immediately.
