Essay- Comparing and contracting Mr. Darcy and Mr.

Bingley

In the novel ”Pride and Prejudice”, two important characters, are the friends Mr. Darcy
and Mr. Bingley. These two men share the same social class, however, beside their apparent
similitude to each other, the difference between Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy lies in manners,
behavior, temperament and even attitude.
From the beginning, Mr. Bingley has good manners, he knows how to act in social
situation and is liked by everyone, easily familiarizing with some of the important people at
the ball, as the narrator says, ”had soon made himself acquainted with all the principal people
in the room”. On the other side, Mr. Darcy, does not have such good manners, he acts
impolitely with others, and is not that good in social situations, by declining being introduce
to other ladies, and only dancing with two, known, women.
The temperament between these two men is another great difference, Mr. Bingley is
amiable and is more enjoyable, having a nicer temper ”easy, unaffected manners”. Mr. Darcy,
is the opposite, he is noble and arrogant, people at the ball does not like him, they consider
him ”disagreeable”, but they are not the only one, even others that know him are aware of
his rude, unpleasant and impolite personality.
Mr. Bingley has a better attitude, he is lively, friendly and pleasant, discussing with
everyone at the ball, while Mr. Darcy preferred to keep himself away of the people, and to
talk, occasionally with some people that he knew. Their experiences are the opposite because
of their attitude, Mr. Bingley has a great time at the ball, while Mr. Darcy does not have such
a good one.
In the end, their similarities are quite one-dimensional, even superficial, and beside
their social status, the money and terrains, these two people are the opposite, one being a
friendly, pleasant and good mannered man, and the other an arrogant, rude and impolite.
