Title: Wau Bulan
Subtitle: Evolution of Wau Bulan

              Wau
bulan is a traditional kite that was first created in the state Kelantan back the
olden days, it was traditional flown by man. It is one of Malaysia's national symbols,
other than the hibiscus and the kris. The wau symbol can also be found in the older
version of a Malaysian’s fifty cents, where it is located on the reverse side with a hammer
on top of it. A. (2014, July 10).

The origin of "Wau Bulan" was in the era of the Sri Wijaya Empire. According to
legend, a young prince named Dewa Muda used the use of Wau by drawing the areas he
had conquered. It is said that the beautiful patterns of flowers and leaves symbolize the
area he successfully conquered. According to legendary beliefs, Dewa Muda is said to
have a spiritual connection with his Wau. Some people think that he has gained special
spiritual guidance by flying to heaven on his “Wau Bulan” and has established spiritual
relationships with residents of another world. adii, lynn_de. (1970, January 1). This
proves that the wau was used for military purposes before, not just flying. The design of
wau was for a reason that time rather than just purely beautiful.

In the past, farmers used wau as a kind of flying scarecrow to frighten off birds
from their paddy fields. Wau are also flown for the sound they make which make
children fall asleep and give adults more time to work. Some kite makers will fly at night
and fall asleep to the sound of the wau. As some believe that wau which flown in rice
fields throughout the night during the windy planting season would raise the “spirit of the
padi” for a bountiful season.(2018, February 6).Wau’s use in the olden days is quite
important which it can bring hope and peace to people.

During the past, flying kites were considered seasonal, usually after rice
harvesting. But for many years, the Malaysian wau attended not only ceremonies, but
also major competitions and international festivals. Today Wow is an art object that is
judged solely by its beauty, intricate design, color combinations and delicate handicraft.
Farah. (1970, January 1). Although the original use of wau has changed in the modern
world, it has not been forgotten. It is still circulated until now.

In conclusion, inheritance of Malaysian wau culture should be continued in the

future. People in this generation should cultivate a love for the faded cultural heritage of
Wau. Retaining its wonderful accompaniment stories and folklore, helping to shape the
next generation of the future, even better kite makers than their predecessors, and
bringing Wau to a new unknown level at an international level. Strings that want to
maintain the beauty of our proud culture will last longer and will be brought to the sky
for many years to come, bringing benefits and knowledge to our next generation.
