Rediscovering the Self


This Learning Module in English for Grade 9 learners is an interactive module designed to provide you
the needs of the learners to collaborative and independent learning of the target themes, concepts and
competencies that will develop your 21st century skills. It will provide you the meaningful tasks to hone your skills
for academic success. It is anchored on the general principles, goals and objectives of the K to 12 Basic
Education program for Grade 9 and to the vision, mission and core values of the institution that will enable you to
develop the 7C’s of lifelong learning (communication, critical thinking and doing, collaboration, creativity, cross-
cultural understanding, computing and ICT and career and learning self-reliance) which are of great help to
become productive and effective member of the society and the world at large. The lessons per quarter are
presented in spiral progress onto achieve proficiency in the seven domains of learning divided into five sub-

INTRODUCTION and FOCUS QUESTIONS

English Communication Arts and Skills through Anglo- American and Philippine Literature Grade 9 will take you
familiar Filipino scenes to the English countryside and to the bustling cities of the US through the wonderful literary
selections that have defined the countries in which they was written. As you enjoy these literary works, you will be taught

Keep in mind the questions: Why is it important to know the modals and its uses in expressing
different moods? HOW ARE MODALS BE USED CORRECTLY ?

 Modals or modal auxiliaries- are used with other verbs to express special meanings.
-They are the helping verbs in English that express mood.
The ten basic modals are: can, could, may, might, must, ought, shall, should, will and would.
Combined with a main verb ,these modals help express ability, necessity, permission, and obligation.

In this lesson, you will evaluate yourself on how can you follow different sign found in different places you go
to, as well as to understand what is this sign for.

 Using May/ Might May and its past tense Might are used to express(1) permission, (2) possibility, (3)
purpose and (4) prayer.

Eg. May I leave the room, Maam? (asking permission)

 Using Will/Would The auxiliary Will is commonly used to express simple futurity its past form Would
when used in a subjunctive mood expresses unreal, contrary to fact.

Eg. They will give you the achievement test at the end of the school year. (simple futurity)

If I were a millionaire, I would certainly travel. (contrary to fast condition)

 Using Shall/ Should The trend today is to use will in all persons; However, those who still cling to the
rules of formal English use shall in the first person singular and plural will in the other persons. To
express determination or promise; many prefer to use shall in the second and third persons. Should, on
the other hand, suggest obligation or duty. It is also used to express likelihood.
Eg. They shall speak for what they believe in. (promise/determination)
I should be able to travel soon. (likelihood)
 Using Must/Ought Must is used to express strong, necessity, obligation or command. Ought is usually
followed to-form of the infinitive. Ought expresses necessity or obligation but with a weaker force.
Eg. The students must do their homework. (command)
We ought to eat lunch by 12 noon. (necessity)

This time, you will know more about the other uses of modals especially in
giving an opinion/ recommendation and in writing, And don’t forget that
Modals are used importantly in expressing permission, obligation and
prohibition.

To begin, let us have again the Modals and the line of activities for the
week.

 Modals or modal auxiliaries- are used with other verbs to express special
meanings.
EXAMPLES. MAKING REQUEST- WILL, WOULD, CAN AND COULD are being used.
