Product Review: Belo Baby Cologne
Gel Jose Gel Jose

Among the first batch of samples I got from Sample Room is a small bottle
Belo Baby Cool Drizzle Cologne. Despite the unwritten rule that grown women
should gravitate towards perfumes, I retain my preference for baby colognes. I
guess it’s a combination of two factors: One, baby colognes are much cheaper than
perfumes, a high-end cologne would, more often than not, cost less than many of
the low-end perfumes. Two, colognes tend to have light fresh scents which I find a
lot more palatable than the heavier and more floral scents of perfumes.
It is packaged in a handy 50ml spritzer bottle which fits in most bags and
kikay kits. I like its fresh scent that lasts for a good couple of hours. It does not
feel so astringent-y when sprayed on, owing to the glycerin component that helps
to moisturize and chamomile-derived Bisabolol (known to have anti-irritant, anti-
inflammatory and anti-microbial properties) that helps to soothe skin. Formulated
without parabens, phthalates, EDTA and coloring agents, Belo Baby Cool Drizzle
Cologne is dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic and safe for all skin types, so it
should be safe for you and your little ones to use. It also doubles as a hand
sanitizer; that means we have less stuff to carry in our bags. To use, spray a small
amount on your hands and apply thoroughly as often as you like.
Belo Baby Cool Drizzle Cologne comes in 50ml (priced at Php64.75) and
100ml (priced at Php79.75) spritzer bottles. It is available at all leading
supermarkets, department stores, groceries, and drugstores nationwide, and
online via Zalora, Lazada and Cudsly.
To quote a wise man, Mr. Jonathan Van Ness of the hit Netflix show, Queer
Eye: “It’s not vanity, it’s self-care. There’s a difference.”

Just because we are busy working moms (and even more so because of it),
we need to take better care of ourselves, to feel good about ourselves, to give our
kids a good example and to make sure we are at our best when we need to be.
The free sample was provided by Sample Room, an online community where
you can “try before you buy” beauty and personal care products to get the ones
which best match you. I just needed to pay for the shipping of the items I
requested.

IV. Conclusion

What is It

Critiques are important rhetorical patterns in academic writing as they

present a balance view of things. Critiques, however, are based not only on personal
perspective but should be grounded on actual observations. Here are some tips in
developing your critique:

1. Remember that the critique should be accessible to the audience.

Therefore, providing background information for the readers will be helpful.
Including the central ideas of the book, the concept, the event or the movie to
be critique is necessary.

2. Relating your critique to greater realities will also help as you ground your
critique on the wider scheme of things. For instance, what subject/theme does
the movie, concept, book or event address? Are there questions that people
constantly ask for this particular subject/theme you are reviewing can
answer?

3. The final section of the critique should include the final recommendations
of the author. For instance, is the movie, book, gadget, event or concept a
good investment of time, effort and money? What background knowledge does
one need to see or use them? Will other activities help to appreciate these?

In general, the critique should be organized in the following manner:

1. the first part should provide the reader a sense of the ideas you want to
tackle

2. the next part should provide a summary of the concept

3. strengths and weaknesses should be part of the critique. Remember that
this is challenging and requires tact.

Here are some expressions that will help you make a critique:

For illustrating Strengths:

* Given its features, _____ may be the best among the competition…
* _____ does not only provide (enumerate common features found in
other counter- parts) but also (enumerate unique features)

For illustrating Weaknesses:

7
* However, _____ may not be wise choice if you need to … (cite specific
activities or features needed by a specific user or audience) …
* In certain cases, _____ lacks some interesting point such as (cite
features or qualities)

* ____ may not appeal to certain users or audiences as it… (cite

specific features or qualities

* In certain cases, _____ may not be a good investment of your time as

it… (cite specific features or qualities)
* Though there are positive points for _____ certain improvements can
be made.

Addressing Opposing Viewpoints

Opposing views, or counter-arguments, challenge your own stance. The
counter-argument helps ensure thorough logic. In case your argument
appears one-sided, you must explore multiple angles of issues and consider their
possible refutations. When the opposing views are handled well, they
do the following:
• Show understanding and respect
• Make your writing credible
• Help readers to empathize with your reasoning

Presentation
When presenting an opposing view, it can become counterproductive if it
is not handled well. Be sure to always speak of the opposing arguments in
these ways:
• Respectfully
• Fairly
• Objectively
• Accurately
• Distinctively (i.e. clearly not your argument)

Refutation
It is not enough to state other notions about an issue. You must refute
them, or show that your logic negates contrary options. When you present
an opposing view, use the following format:
1. Opposing view
2. Refutation based on your argument
3. Evidence supporting the refutation

First, present the opposing view. Next, present your own argument,
clearly showing why you disagree with the opposing view. Finally, (perhaps
most importantly) provide logical evidence that supports your rebuttal.

Activity 1. Drafting an introduction

Directions: Read the example below then answer the questions that follow:

News discourse is a rich area in language studies that has attracted

attention among scholars both old and new. Departing from merely
examining printed text, the present era of globalization technologies poses
serious challenges for the analysis of news discourse, given that procedures
of news employ different modalities to deliver their message. In addition,
the growing mobility of individuals (geographic, virtual, and social) raise
interesting questions on the suitable frameworks available for researchers
to fully understand different aspects of news discourse. Given the present
scenario, this book elucidates the challenges of studying news discourse.

Presented in nine chapters, the book conveniently deals with specific

aspects of the topic, giving readers a manageable resource for study.
Chapter 1 overviews the book, starting with definitions of news discourse,
then outlining the different approaches (sociolinguistic, corpus linguistic,
critical discourse analytic, to name a few) and methods of collecting data.
Included in this section is the importance of studying discourse, which may
spark interest among beginning scholars and readers unfamiliar with the
area (Valdez,2014).1

Activity 2. Making comparison
Aside from providing an overview, it is important to provide informed
insights on these features. For instance, strengths and weaknesses should be
based on what is observable and comparable to other items of the same class.

Focusing on the underline opinions, write a paragraph consist of five

sentences differentiating on how the writer gave justification on the statements.

Sample 1

The smartphone has an eight-megapixel camera supported by both

Bluetooth technology and wireless applications. These features are standard
among modern phones, so that the higher price is not justified.

Sample 2
The movie is worth seeing because it features not only talented actors
but also tells an excellent story filled with unexpected twists.

Activity 3 Writing a draft

Directions: Using the paragraph below, prepare the body of the review with the
guide questions in the table. Then, write the draft of your critique using the
responses given.

(1) Chapter 1 explains the use of digital media and how they enhance
oral and written language. The readers become aware of the new delivery of
language. This clarifies the idea that both oral and written language can be
interactive. (2) Chapter 2 gives the definition of language and elaborates on
the strengths and weaknesses of oral and written discourse. Here the
author emphasizes that though oral language is important; other modes of
communication were developed to enhance the message.

Assessment

Directions: Read the following paragraph then provide feedback using the
statements given:

The book is a valuable resource as it provides interesting theoretical and

methodological means for analyzing news discourse. For instance, analyzing the
combination of images and text allows greater understanding of values encoded in
the news. In addition, the book adequately discusses means for addressing
methodological problem in analyzing data in different forms of media. Moreover,
since the book draws on different perspective, readers will find a range of option to
work with when confronting their own data. To illustrate, news may not only be seen
on the national/international scene of one’s data through adequate examples.
The book is intended as a suitable introduction for graduate students and
researchers interested in exploring the complexities of news discourse, as integrates
several theoretical and methodological perspectives, giving readers a freehand on
deciding which approach to employ in analyzing their own data. Overall this book,
which is part of the Continuum series of books covering areas of discourse, is a

What is It

Critical Approaches are different perspectives considered when looking at the

piece of literature. They seek to give us answers to these questions, in addition to
aiding us in interpreting literature.

1. What do we read?
2. Why do we read?

3. How do we read?

Types Critical Approaches used in Literature

1. Formalist Criticism emphasizes the form of a literary work to determine its
meaning, focusing on literary elements and how they work to create meaning.

* Examine a text as independent from its time period, social setting and
author’s background. A text is an independent entity.
* Focuses on close reading texts and analysis of the effects of literary
elements and techniques on the text.

15
Two Major Principles of Formalism
1. A literary text exists independent of any particular reader and, in
sense, has a fixed meaning.
2. The greatest literary text are “timeless” and “universal”

Common aspects looked into in formalism:

* The name of the author is not important
* The time in which the author lived is not important
* The political belief of the author is not important
* The actual reader is not important
* The key understanding of a text is through a text itself
* Author’s techniques in resolving contradictions within the work.
* Relationship of the form and the content
* Unity in the work

2. Feminist Criticism is concerned with the role, position, and influence of a

women in literary text.
* Asserts the most “literature” throughout time has been written by men,for
men.
* Examines the way that the female consciousness is depicted by both male
and female writers.

Common aspects looked into in feminism:

* How culture determines gender.
* How gender equality is presented in the text
* How gender issues are presented in literary works.
* How women are socially, politically, psychologically and
economically oppressed by patriarchy.

3. Reader-Response Criticism asserts that a great deal of meaning in a text lies

with how the reader responds to it.
* Focuses on the act of reading and how it affects our perception of meaning
in the text. (how we feel at the beginning vs. the end)
* Deals more with the process of creating meaning and experiencing a text as
we read. A text is an experience, not an object
* The text is a living thing that lives in the reader’s imagination.

Two important ideas in Reader-Response

1. An individual reader’s interpretation usually changes over time.
2. Readers from different generations and different time periods interpret
tests differently.

16
4. Deconstruction is a school of literary criticism that suggests that language is
not a stable entity, and that we can never exactly say what we mean.
* Explains that literature cannot give a reader any one single meaning,
because the language itself is simply too ambiguous.
* Deconstructionists value the idea that literature cannot provide any
outside meaning; texts cannot represent reality.
* Deconstructionist critic will deliberately emphasize the ambiguities of the
language that produce a variety of meanings and possible readings of a text.

5. Psychological Criticism views a text as revelation of its author’s mind and

personality. It is based on the work of Sigmund Freud.
* Focuses on the hidden motivation of literary characters.
* Looks at literary characters as a reflection of the writer.

What’s More

Activity 1. Comprehending the Essay

Directions: Read the essay then answer the questions that follow:

Ang Bayan Muna Bago ang Sarili

(Excerpts from the Homily of Jaime Cardinal Sin at the Mass celebrating the
5th death anniversary of Ninoy Aquino)

(1) Five years later, we might ask ourselves; has Ninoy’s dream been
fulfilled? Have we succeeded in building a new nation, by “transcending our petty
selves,” by setting aside our differences by working together in a spirit of true self-
giving, loving our country first, above our own interest? Bayan muna, bago ang
sarili. It is a question we must ask ourselves, as we remember Ninoy’s gift.

(2) It has been said that the truest motto of our people is “K.K.K”.
No, not Katipunan, shaping unity out of our diversity. How we wish that were our
authentic name! But rather:
Kanya-Kanya’ng Katwiran,
Kanya-Kanya’ng Kagustuhan,
Kanya-Kanya’ng Kabig (or worse)
Kanya-Kanya’ng Kurakot...

or whatever else each one “specializes” in!

(3) Cynics among us say that K.K.K is the definition of our national
character, the predominant strain in our national culture. It’s what we are when we
are “most natural”, most ourselves. “Bayan muna, Bago ang Sarili” is an abstract,

17
non-operative ideal, good for speeches, good for posters, good for classroom
rhetoric but not for real, not for real life. For real is K.K.K.
(4) Kanya-Kanyang Katwiran, Kanya-Kanyang kagustuhan. We all remember
the three monkeys; See no Evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. Sometimes one
wonders, if it has become a national pastime, to see and hear and speak nothing,
but evil against our fellow-citizens. Talk can be a great service in a free nation: Talk
is space for free discussion, for intelligent debate, the exchange of information and
perception, the clash of views.

(5) Ninoy himself said: “We must criticize in order to be free, because we are
free online when we criticized. "we may not, at our own peril, forget that. But we
must remind ourselves that criticism is not an end in itself; it is not the absolute. It
is meant to help is to become free, but if it becomes the all-encompassing output of
our days, a way of life... So, it takes up most of our energy, most of our time, when
we begin to take delight in tearing down, demoralizing, destabilizing; when we are
at each other's throats all day long, then we really are engaged in self- destruction
of hope, the creation of despair, especially among the poor who continue to suffer
in our minds.

(6) There is a Latin saying "unicuique suam, non pravalebunt". Every man for
himself. That's the formula for disaster. When Ninoy spoke of the quest for the
elusive national unity which is imperative for the nation's survival, he said survival.
He meant "survival". How can we survive as a nation and as a people? If we have
made the name of our national games as an anarchic free-for-all "basket of crabs?"

(7) K. K. K. Also means, we are told... Kanya Kanyang Kabig, Kanya Kanyang
Kurakot. Surely, I don’t need to dwell on this theme this morning. For weeks, the
papers, radios, TV, have shouted nothing else. It is the talk of the marketplace. I
myself have spoken", often enough of the 40 big thieves left behind in our midst
and many smaller ones which mighty include even themselves? Who among us did
not re-echo the sentiments and the work of the beloved Chino Roces when he asked
for a renewed moral order in government and society? It is a big problem which
must be addressed, and addressed vigorously and unrelentingly.
(8) I am such this will be increasingly done by our president, by consist
personal example she has set a pattern for others to follow. I know he is bent on
pursuing the battle against corruption with ever more forceful and energetic action.
But we know, we know that she and those around her cannot do this all by
themselves. As citizens, we must go " into an action mode ourselves." the task
cannot be done without us.

(9) We must begin, rather, where we can begin, with ourselves we must ask:
what can we do about it? What in our own heart, in our attitudes, in our practices,
must be changed? What sacrifice must we ourselves do to make a positive
contribution of deeds, to put under control this chronic illness in our society, and
in our culture?

(10) If all we do is talk and talk, and throw dirt at each other-forgetting to
mind the ship and its engines, and steer it in mine-filed waters why, we will still be
taking and quarreling when our ship goes down into the seat.

18
(11) If everyone in this church this morning, in Ninoy's memory, pledge
before the Lord that for one year, "Bayan Muna, Bago ang Sarili" would really be
made an operation guideline, could it not mark at least a begging? If for one year,
just to get going, we would make the principle govern our deeds, our conduct in
society, would that not be smart already? How can we 'dream the impossible
dream" and promise to follow the stars " if we have become too calloused to do even
this?

Additional Activities

Think of a social phenomenon or current event that you deeply care about.
Research about it in newspaper and online sources. If you cannot think of any
topic or current event, you may choose one of the following:

⮚ a recent calamity
⮚ the COVID19
⮚ a devastating flood
⮚ the Bagong Bayani or OFW
⮚ the BPO industry and its effect

Write a reaction paper about that event. Make sure that you do the
following when writing the reaction paper.

1. Get readers interest in the event

2. Summarize the event

22
3. Try to look at the event from different angles.

4. Use words for effect, whether this is to emphasize what you want to say or
to be ironic about inconsistencies you notice.

5. Come up with original insights about the event.

The Rubric for evaluating your reaction paper is as follows:

● Content (50%): This includes the relevance of the event and your
reaction; the informative and entertainment value of your paper;
societal importance of your paper.
● Organization (20%): This includes the appropriate use of transitional
markers; the correct use of paragraphs; the logical flow of ideas.
● Language (20%): This includes the use of vocabulary words to heighten the
reader’s experience; the use of wit, metaphor, simile and irony.
● Mechanics (10%): This includes the correct use of grammar, spelling,
punctuation and sentence sense.

Graduate student enrollment has increased in recent years, but these
students face many challenges on their part to a degree. Researchers have noted
that graduate students experience anxiety and stress that may be connected to
high attrition rates (Poock, 2002). In the article “Student anxiety: Effects of a new
graduate student orientation program,” Megan Hullinger and Dr. R. Lance Hogan
(2014) examined the impact of an online orientation program on student anxiety.
While this article produced significant results showing that an orientation
program could reduce anxiety of new graduate students there are limitations
related to the replicability, sample, and generalizability of results.

PRODUCT REVIEW: SHAMPOO WITH A PURPOSE3

I’ll admit I didn’t have hugely high expectations when given the chance to
try out a shampoo bar for washing my hair. After 50+ years of pouring shampoo
from a bottle, shampoo that looked like a bar of soap just sounded a little weird.
But I also had a couple of other doubts. Firstly, living in the tropics,
humidity plays havoc with a lot of products not designed for these tough
conditions so I anticipated it would ‘collapse’ into a soggy, gloppy useless lump of
messy soap in my shower.
Secondly, I wondered how a bar of shampoo was going to provide a rich,
cleansing lather on long straight hair that gets a daily wash.
Dispelling any doubts, I was immediately drawn to the philosophy of
Shampoo with a Purpose. Created by mother and daughter business partners Liz
and Geneva, not only do they aim to turn shampoo on its head they aim to do
away with the relentless need for plastic bottles that regular shampoo and
conditioners are packaged in.
Says Geneva, “We had been told that processing shampoo bars on the
machinery we use would be impossible, but nevertheless, Liz persisted, and we
have since become the first and only company to process shampoo/conditioner
bars on triple-milling, commercial machinery.”
There’s a really holistic story behind the shampoo bars that shuns palm oil
and chemical sulphates, is vegan friendly with no animal testing as well as being
completely free of plastic packaging. All admirable attributes. The pair also have
some sassy pizazz and have created a fun personality around their brand.
“After achieving the “impossible” we had to create our brand – we wanted to
do something fun and fresh with a shit-tone of added personality. Every box is
covered in hand-drawn pictures of friends and family, along with plenty of
education around our product, and our mission – to provide a simple and easy
option to help reduce plastic consumption in the shower.”
Shampoo with a Purpose claims that one Shampoo Bar will replace six bottles
of shampoo and conditioner. While I haven’t kept an accurate record, I have noticed
that I’m no longer filling my rubbish bin with shampoo and conditioner bottles.
“Our unique manufacture process has made one of our bars worth up to 6
bottles of shampoo and conditioner and ensures that they hold their integrity in the
shower. No mush!”

What is It

A very important expository discourse that the students must know how to
write is the reaction paper or review or critique. It is mainly written to
communicate a fair assessment of situations, people, events and literary and artistic
works and performances. Whether a social commentary or critical judgement, it
conveys sharp insights into its analysis of events, its interpretation of the meaning
or importance of a work or artifact, or its appreciation of the moral or aesthetic values
reflected in the work or performance. It may include the main purpose of the event;
the devices and strategies employed; an evaluation of its success or failure; and an
assessment of its significance and relevance, timeless or timelessness.

Principles of Writing Effective Reviews and Critiques

a. Gives a fair and balance social commentary
b. Provides relevant and accurate factual information on the situation
c. Exhibits by means of thorough and in-depth analysis an appreciation of
context (including time, place, people, involvement, their motivation, and
actuations)
d. Makes a clear distinction, through language, between what is actual and
what is probable or possible
e. Exhibits a deep sense of humanity and an understanding of the human
situation even while expressing disapproval or disagreement most intensely.

Product Review: Lipstick Colors and Swatches 4
I have to say I was overall pretty impressed with the products I tried. It shows
that you don't need to rely on the big brands to deliver a quality product. I hope this
encourages more boutique brands to start popping up and providing us with more
great options to choose from.
I recently came across a few lipsticks from a company called Kismet
Cosmetics. Many of you probably have not heard of this brand. I hadn't either until
very recently. Kismet is a boutique cosmetics brand that is based out of Louisiana
and was created by a local makeup artist in the area.
I tried three of the semi-matte lipsticks from their Velvet Collection: Crushed
Coral (a mix of pink and orange tones), Burnout (a classic red) and Vivianna (a rich
plum). I also tried out their new Succulent Collection that just recently became
available. The Succulent Collection is Kismet's 2015 Fall/Winter collection of liquid
lipsticks. The collection has four shades: Elope (a nude), Flamingo (a vibrant pink
"statement color"), Speakeasy (a classic red) and On Point (a pink with orchid and
nude undertones).
When trying these lipsticks, I based my review of them on four points:
1) Color Intensity: Does the lipstick color transfer on my lips just as it
looks in the tube?
2) Moisture: Does this lipstick hydrate my lips or leave them looking
and feeling dry and cracked?
3) Resilience: How often will I need to touch up this lipstick? Is it long
lasting?
4) Pliability and Wear: Does this product spread comfortably onto my
lips without being so creamy that it bleeds through the lip line?
Without any further ado, here is my experience with each of the
lipsticks I tried.

Crushed Coral: The name of this lipstick describes it perfectly. It is an orangey color
that is very popular right now. Crushed Coral is a perfect blend between orange and
pink that looks amazing in the summer months. I think this lipstick would
complement any boho chic look perfectly!
The color transferred from the tube almost identically, which is always
refreshing to see in a lipstick. It was creamy and glided nicely onto my lips. Since
this color is on the lighter side it was not very noticeable when it began to fade. I only
needed to touch it up once during the day. I highly recommend this for anyone that
loves the summer beachy look.
Burnout: I am a sucker for a good red lipstick. The color transferred onto my lips
exactly how it was presented in the tube. It went on smoothly and felt nice on my
lips. The non-drying formula allowed the lipstick to glide nicely on my skin.
With that being said, there are a lot of red lipsticks out there and everyone
looks for the red the suits them best. I think this color would look best on someone
with a bit of a lighter skin tone than mine. Against my skin it looked a little on the
pinkish red side rather than the deep red I usually go for. I used Kismet's liquid
lipstick "Speakeasy" over top of this to darken it up a bit and it brought me to the

27
desired deepness of a blue red that I love! Overall, I think this is a great color. The
color payoff is amazing and I only needed to touch up twice throughout the day.

Vivianna: This lipstick surprised me. Looking at the color in the tube I thought it
would be my least favorite of the semi-mattes. Turns out, it ended up being my
favorite! In the tube it looked like it would be dryer than the other lipsticks and that
it would transfer as a flat purple on my lips. Boy, was I wrong? This lipstick went on
just as smoothly as the other two. The difference however was the other lipsticks
seemed to remain true to their color in the tube when applied to the lips. Thankfully,
in this case, the color transferred differently than what I was looking at in the tube.
Once applied, it was a deep purplish pink color with hints of burgundy. It is the best
deep berry color I have come across on the market. I will be using this on a regular
basis (wearing it now actually!). I had to touch this lipstick up twice during the day
and it was only after eating meals. It doesn't seem to fade very much on its own
without something physically pulling it off. Love, love, love this color!

Overall Comments: These lipsticks are vibrant, long lasting and extremely
hydrating. I tried 3 of the 10 semi-matte colors that are currently part of the Velvet
Collection and if the other 7 lipsticks hold up to the same standards, I would highly
recommend giving them a try.

Sample Food and Restaurant Review
Chinese BBQ Skewers 捌拾胡同風味烤串店
Location: Hang Hau MTR, Exit A

This intimate and cozy restaurant is located in the Tseung Kwan O area, by
the Hang Hau MTR. It seats about 18, with small tables and wooden stools for
seats and has an extensive menu for BBQ items. The service is quite good, with
about 3 servers who are polite and efficient with cleaning up the empty plates so
more can come.

This place is so good, that I've been there three times in under a month.
Each time we go, we always order the different assortments of meat; the cubed
beef, lamb, chicken wings, glazed pork and the eggplant. Eat dish is seasoned with
its own spices and herbs which come out smelling savory and appetizing, unlike
other places that use the same seasoning for all dishes.

The chicken wings are one of my favorites. The wings are seasoned with a
spicy seasoning and done just right, with the skin a bit crispy and the meat juicy
which makes for a heavenly delight. The glazed pork and chicken are also very
delectable and mouthwatering. All the flavor is kept in while grilling and goes well
with a cold drink. One of my new favorites is the grilled Chinese buns with
condensed milk to make it something of a dessert.

The prices are extremely reasonable compared to similar places in Causeway

Bay or TST and just as good, if not better!
Cost: $100/person, no 10% service charge

What I Have Learned

Writing review is not an easy task you need to follow principles in writing
effective reviews. Students must remember to give fair and balance social
commentary. Likewise, providing relevant and accurate factual information on the
situation must be considered in writing reviews.

Furthermore, by means of thorough and in-depth analysis an appreciation of

context including time, place, people, involvement, their motivation, and actuations
were another factor that the students must take into considerations.
Finally, making a clear distinction through language between what is actual
and what is probable are concerned in writing reviews.

A review article is a critical, constructive analysis of the literature in a specific

field through summary, classification, analysis, comparison.
• A scientific text relying on previously published literature or data. New data
from the author’s experiments are not presented (with exceptions: some
reviews contain new data).

Types of Review Articles

1. Narrative review - Selected studies are compared and summarized on the basis
of the author’s experience, existing theories and models. Results are based on a
qualitative rather than a quantitative level.

2. Best evidence review - A focus on selected studies is combined with systematic

methods of study-selection and result exploration.

3. Systematic review - Findings from various individual studies are analyzed

statistically by strict procedures. Meta-Analyses are used to pool the results of
individual studies.

BEST DRESSED

One of the biggest nights in Philippine entertainment dominated social

media in its debut – the first ever ABS-CBN Ball held on Saturday, September 29 at
the Shangri-La Makati. All the stars of the network graced the highly-anticipated
red carpet event, which is the country’s equivalent to the Oscar’s.

For many people, it's seemingly a superficial event. But for these celebrities,
it’s about branding and imaging. It’s a tool that helps them get publicity, attention
and in some cases, notoriety. For months prior, fashion designers and stylists have
been hard at work trying to come up with the most fabulous gown that is both
unique and different.

Unfortunately for some celebrities, they fall victim to the creative

experimentation of their stylists. Unless they have a strong sense of self and style,
they end up as fashion road kill.

To the viewing public, it’s a chance for them to dream about such a lavish,
star studded event. The following celebrities did not disappoint their adoring public
with their spectacular looks.

35
THE BEST DRESSED WOMEN

Sue Ramirez
High fashion, flapper fabulosity. The 1920’s inspired, burgundy/deep old rose gown
by Mak Tumang is exquisite. She looks great from every angle. As she walks, you
see this heavily embroidered, halter top bodice with asymmetric, long fringe beads
on the skirt. Exiting the red carpet, the cascading beads from the nape across her
back on nude tulle creates even more interest. The short, sleek hairstyle with a side
part and minimal jewelry made this look Oscar’s red carpet worthy. If I were a
celebrity, I would immediately book her stylist.

Jessy Mendiola

Golden mermaid eleganza. This nude illusion, a halter serpentina Patricia Santos
gown looks like it was painted on Jessy. The fit is perfection and the very flattering
beadwork pattern highlighted her curves. Her soft make-up and the center parted
low ponytail complete this classy look. Other celebrities should learn from Jessy’s
style. You can be sexy, hot, and still be classy. I love that Jessy was smiling and
didn’t feel the need to pout and project. This unpretentious air is what truly makes
her sexy.

Janella Salvador

Haute in hot pink. If you want to pop against a backdrop of green foliage, hot pink
is the way to go. This Deep-V, voluminous ballgown by Michael Leyva is perfect for
this teen star. The high ponytail with bangs gives it a very youthful and fresh look.
The diamond necklace adds a bit of sparkle to this bright ensemble.

Sarah Geronimo

Pretty and petite princess. Everyone was talking about Sarah’s first time at the ball
with her boyfriend Matteo Guidicelli. All eyes were certainly on her when she
arrived in this sparkly white, A-line skirt, pointy bustier with a side cutout that
seemed to defy gravity, a custom design by Mark Bumgarner. It’s a very simple
silhouette that says understated elegance. Her clean bob and fresh face where all
that’s needed to perfect this look. Having Matteo by her side didn’t hurt either.

36
Yassi Pressman

Rouched rouge radiance. There is nothing out of the ordinary about this Lauren dela
Cruz gown. It’s a classic, rouched, Grecian inspired, spaghetti strap top with a very
full, flowy skirt. The immaculate construction and fit makes simple gowns look
stunning. Yassi’s hair had soft waves, wispy bangs and bold lipstick made the overall
appearance looked relax. Yassi is the epitome of stylishly fashionable Simplicity.7

Manny Pacquiao is “not surprised” the World Boxing Organization affirmed

the loss of his welterweight title to Australian Jeff Horn, but the Philippine legend
railed at judges who “manipulated results”.
The World Boxing Organization (WBO) ordered a review of the scoring of the
July 2 bout in Brisbane at the request of the Philippines’ Games and Amusements
Board, who criticized the judges and the referee. The WBO set up a panel of
independent and anonymous judges to watch the bout without sound and
determine who won each round, they found Horn won seven rounds to Pacquiao’s
five.
“We have seen worse judgments in the past where judges manipulated results.
Nothing surprises me now,” Pacquiao said. He did not name the judges nor
mention the specific fights in his allegations.
“Let the people judge for themselves. People saw what happened,” said the
38-year-old, who had won world titles in an unprecedented eight weight divisions.
The undefeated but unheralded Horn, 29, had stunned the Filipino legend with his
ultra-aggressiveness to earn a unanimous decision.
