 What are the structure and language of
Critique?
 How will I be able to use Critique, Review and
Reaction Paper?

REACTION PAPER
• is a type of written assignment which requires personal opinion and conclusion.

• Reaction paper consists of four (4) main parts:

- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
- Reference/s
REACTION PAPER
Here are some questions to ask when you write a reaction paper:

• What is the book, event, or phenomenon about?

• Did it meet its objective/s?
• How do I feel about it? Did it influence me in a negative or positive way?
• What insights did I get from it?
• Did I tactfully justify my reaction toward the book, event, place, thing, etc.?
REVIEWS
• is not a “term paper”. It is not merely a report. Writers may provide an honest appraisal of it, combining an
opinion with accurate facts. In addition, reviews involve arguments, so writers are expected to state the claim
in the main idea.

• Review paper consists of four (4) general parts:

- Introduction
- Body
- Conclusion
- Reference/s
REVIEWS
Guide questions in writing reviews:

• Does my review reflect my understanding of the book, event, or phenomenon that I am evaluating?
• Did I highlight important aspects of the book, event, or phenomenon?
• Have I included enough details and evidence to help readers evaluate the merits of the book, event, place or
phenomenon that I am evaluating?
• Have I been fair in my evaluation?
• Did I make a clear argument? Did I support my opinion with accurate, verifiable facts?
• Have I given my readers enough basis to make an informed judgment based on my evaluation?
CRITIQUE PAPER
Critiques are an important rhetorical pattern in academic writing as they present a balanced view
of things. Critiques, however, are based not only on personal perspective but should be grounded on
actual observations. Here are some tips in developing your critique:

1. Remember that the critique should be accessible to the audience. Therefore, providing
background information for the readers will be helpful. Including the central ideas of the book,
the concept, the event, or the movie to be critiqued is necessary.

2. Relating your critique to greater realities will also help as you ground your critique on the wider
scheme of things. For instance, what subject/theme doe the movie, concept, book, or event
address? Are there questions that people constantly ask that this particular subject/theme you are
reviewing can answer?
Critique must be organized according to
this order:
1. First part. This part should provide readers a sense of the ideas you want to
discuss. (What are some problems people face in their daily lives? What are some
up-to-date debated topics discussed among groups concerning the community?)

2. Next, this part should provide a summary of the concept.

3. Strengths and weaknesses should be part of the critique. Remember that this is
challenging and requires fact. (See next slide/page.)
4. Final section should include the final recommendations of the author. For
instance, is the movie, book, gadget, event, or concept a good investment of time,
effort, and money? What background knowledge does one need to see or use
them? Will other activities help to appreciate these?
Some expressions such as the ones below
will help.
Illustrating Strengths
Given its features, X may be the best among the competition…
X does not only provide (enumerate common features found in other counterparts) but also (enumerate unique
features)…

Illustrating Weaknesses
However, X may not be a wise choice if you intend to… (Cite specific activities or features needed by a specific
user or audience.)
In certain cases, X lacks some interesting points such as… (Cite specific features or qualities.)

X may not appeal to certain users or audiences as it… (Cite specific features or qualities.)

In certain cases, X may not be a good investment of your time as it… (Cite specific features or qualities.)

Though these are positive points for X, certain improvements can be made.
Writing the Reaction Paper/ Review/
Critique
T Do a product review. The product may be a gadget, a piece of
clothing or garment, or an item popularly used among young
A generations. Your written output should have the following parts:
S 1. Introduction- What is the product about? What are its features?

K 2. Review- How does the product compare with its counterparts or other brands?
3. Recommendation- Will you recommend consumers to purchase the item? Why
or why not?

1 Note: Take a photo of the product. Include it on a separate sheet.

Writing the Reaction Paper/ Review/
Critique
1. The critique should provide background information for the
reader to grasp the issue raised in your piece. For instance, to
introduce the topic, include current problems or information
that will be helpful for making your critique accessible to your
readers. (Research and review this link

0Critique_Neutral.pdf
for your example. Use this example throughout this phase.)
2. A major part of critique is a brief summary of the event, book,
concept, or object being critiqued. In this part, specific descriptions are
needed for the reader to have an overview of the central features of the
topic.
Aside from providing an overview, it is important to provide informed
insights on these features. For instance, weakness or strengths should be
based on what is observable and comparable to other items of the same
class.

3. The evaluation of the final section should summarize the strengths
and weaknesses of the subject to be critiqued. This includes points for
readers to consider before reading the book, watching the film,
attending the event, or purchasing the item.
Among the different sections of the critique, two important points
should stand out. First, recommendations must be backed up from
sources to strengthen your claims. Second, a negative appraisal must be
expressed with tact.
TASK 2:
Write and prepare for your output. Use the format given on the general
instructions.

1. Write a review about a product (best-known product of your generation).

Your critique should be at least 500 words and should not exceed 800 words.
The critique should not only focus on the details of the event but also on the
contribution of it to the community. In addition, the review should show
major importance of using the product to the welfare of the society or
oneself.
