Explore the relationship between media,
culture and globalization. Approaches
past and current challenges concerning
international communication and
explores and problematizes the
power of media presentation.
Through globalization
and media people
realized that they
belong to one world
called global village
(coined in 1960s by
Marshal MacLuhan)
which expresses the
idea that people
throughout the world
are interconnected
through the use of
new media
technologies.
Media are the communication channels used in
disseminating information. News from another
country, ideas about the existence of indigenous
people in remote parts of the world, new
inventions and discoveries, and the like are now
known to the world.

Culture refers to the way of life of the

people (all aspects) passed from generation
to generation which differs from one place to
another, but now cultures of other countries
have influenced mainstream media, such as
food, clothing and music.
Precursor
Scholars even posit that media and
transportation technology were
globalized as early as 1900s, and
that triggered changes in migration
patterns as people move easily and
freely and advancement in media
brought changes to human life
heightened globalization.
Eventually, global media culture
came into existence.
Global media cultures create a
continuous cultural exchange in which
crucial aspects such as identity,
nationality, religion, behavioral norms
and way of life are continuously
questioned and challenged.

▪ Media culture is a major factor in

information of mainstream culture
since it affects the opinions, values,
attitudes, tastes and availability of
such information in the society.
Mainstream culture is the culture that is
held by or seems the most “normal” to a
large amount of people that live in a society.

▪ It includes all popular culture and media

culture, typically disseminated by mass
media.

light on important
issues of indigenous
life through This is

Media Cultures
Development of

The relationship that exists between and

among media, culture and globalization.

1. Media is largely a cultural product, and the

transfer of such product is likely to have an
influence on the recipient culture.
2. As technology propels globalization, it also
facilitates quick communication, coordinated
transport system and efficient mass marketing.
Development of

Groups of people are formed

because of language since it serve
as important symbols of group
belonging, enabling different groups
of people to know what ethnic groups
they belong to, and what common
heritages they share. Without it,
people lose their cultural identity.
Development of

▪ Approximately, there are 7,117

languages spoken to this date.
▪ 40% of which is endangered with
less than 1,000 people remaining
who can actually speak the said
languages.
▪ Conversely, 23 languages widely
spoken account to more than half
of the global population
Knowledge of one or several languages
enables us to perceive new horizons, to
think globally, and to increase our
understanding of ourselves and of our
neighbors.

Languages are, then, the very lifeline of

globalization: without language, there
would be no globalization; and vice versa,
without globalization, there would be no
world languages.
Development of

Aside from oral communication, early

people communicate through writing in
wood, stones, and others

▪ Cuneiform in Ancient Mesopotamia

▪ Hieroglyphics in Ancient Egypt
▪ Baybayin which was the writing
system of the pre-colonial Filipinos
Development of

The media used in writing have

developed gradually until papyrus
was introduced by Egyptians.

Ideas, knowledge and everything that

the people wrote were organized.
Development of

It is an automated device that allows mass

production of uniform printed materials,
texts or documents in the form of books,
pamphlets and newspapers.

Johannes Gutenberg invented the first printing press in

1436, although the Chinese have already invented the
woodblock printing in the 9th Century (Roos, 2019).
Development of

▪ Printed information had been preserved

as standardized knowledge compared to
oral culture.
▪ It encouraged literacy and growth of
schools, since ideas were easily
circulated and accessible to the public.
Development of

This refers to broadcast and storage

media and take advantage of electronic
technology. It also includes television,
radio, Internet, CD-ROMs, DVD and
others which utilize electricity or digital
encoding of information.
Development of

These electronic media continuously

open new perspectives of
globalization since they are used as
artistic means of cultural expression.

▪ Currently, the most powerful medium

is television, and also considered as
the defining moment of globalization
according to Lule (2012).
Development of

Interactive devices were recently

introduced in response to the digital
age. Computers are used to access
globally which have eventually
transformed culture.

Exchange of ideas is now easy, relations are

fostered virtually, linkages are also established
through the use of social media platforms.
