1.The setting: The
battle happened on the
rocky white shores
of Mactan—a reminder
of the death bed of
Ferdinand Magellan and
a victory site
of Lapulapu and his
people.
2. The sentry: According to
the writings of
Antonio Pigafetta, warriors
were assembled
and expected Magellan’s
arrival. Lapulapu stands like
a sentry of his domain,
standing on top of a
pedestal. The
trapezoidal pedestal
symbolizes the territory he
protects.
3. The mangatang: Warriors
are in a mangatang position if
they expect someone to
challenge their defense.
Mactan’s name is believed to
have evolved from the Visayan
word mangatang, which is a
strategy-like attitude of
warriors who are waiting.
Three warriors on each side of
the monument represent the
three divisions of more than
“His victory changed the course of
our nation. We must honor his
bravery and legacy and may all
generations, especially the future, be
inspired by him.”

Mediums in Sculpture
Stone
Bronze
Wood
Ivory
Terra Cotta
Other Materials
(Aluminum, steel,
plastic, etc)
Stone
Advantage:
• Stone is durable, resistant to the elements, fire, and
other hazards
Disadvantage:
• It is heavy and may break easily
• Marble is the most beautiful of all stones
• It has been the favorite material in Greece and Italy
where it is plentiful
• Because of its hardness it is more permanent
• It has a high gloss when polished
Moai
Bronze
Advantages:
• Rich color and smooth texture, makes it one of the
most beautiful mediums
• Relatively light and the figure can support in many
positions that would be impossible in stone
Disadvantages:
• In large statues, the artist would prefer to make it
hollow inside because if he chooses to make it solid
metal, it would be heavy and expensive
• It tends to crack when its cooked
• Difficult and intricate to cast bronze
• Bronze statues can also be melted for other purposes
Wood
Advantages:
• Cheap, readily available, and easy to cut
• Polishes well and has a smooth shiny surface and
beautiful color
• Relative light and can be made easily into a variety
of shapes
• Grain of wood that can be seen adds to its beauty
Disadvantages:
• Limited in size and burns easily
Ben Butler’s
Unbounded
• Are known to discolor and decay easily (especially
in warm climates like in the Philippines)
Ivory
Advantages
• Can survive for a long, long time
• Smooth Texture
Disadvantages
Madonna and • Lacks vigor of wooden statues
Child • Also tends to crack
Terra Cotta
Literally means “cooked earth”
Disadvantages
• Breaks and chip easily
• Not a strong material and cannot stand great strain or
weight
Other Materials
Line
• Shape of the piece of art
• Could be horizontal, vertical, and
diagonal
• Lead viewer’s eyes full
perspective of the subject of the
sculpture
• Horizontal lines – Connote peace
and tranquility
• Vertical Lines – Forceful and Diego Cabezas “Line
dynamic; allow subject to “stand” Drawings”
• Diagonal Lines – Action lines;
