Activity #1:

Magnetic Field Exploration!

Materials:

 16-ounce bottle (plastic water bottle/soda bottle)

 Iron fillings (provided by the teacher)
 Plastic test tube (provided by the teacher)
 Funnel
 Masking tape
 Magnet (provided by the teacher)

Procedure:

1. Remove any labels from the plastic bottle.

2. Use the funnel to fill the bottle about one-fifth full of iron filings.
3. Wrap the top of the test tube with masking tape so the test tube will fit snugly into the mouth of the
bottle, plugging the opening completely (see photo below for reference).

4. Put the tube into the mouth of the bottle.

5. Slide the magnet into the test tube and put the bottle cap back on ( see the photo below for
reference).

6. Turn the bottle on its side and rotate it. Observe what will happen.

Guide questions:

1. What happened to the iron fillings as soon as the magnet was inserted inside the test tube and was
placed in the bottle?
2. What evidence do you have that suggests the magnet is interacting with the iron filings?
3. Did you observe where the most iron filings are being attracted to the magnet?
Activity # 2:
Magnetic Field, shape me out!

Materials:

 Big piece of paper (recyclable will do)

 bar magnet (the teacher will provide)
 U-shaped magnet (the teacher will provide)
 Iron fillings (the teacher will provide)

Procedure:

1. Arrange a piece of paper on a flat surface and place a bar magnet over it.
2. Gently, sprinkle the iron filings around the bar magnet and make sure they spread all over the paper.
3. Observe the effects of the magnet towards the iron fillings and note down the observation data.
4. Now replace the bar magnet with U-shaped ones and again observe the effects magnet towards the
iron fillings again.
5. Arrange the bar magnets in parallel, aligned and not aligned arrangements and observe what will
happen to the iron fillings and draw what you observe.

Guide questions:

1. What did you observe when you sprinkled the iron filings over the paper covering the bar magnet?
Draw what you observed.
2. Explain why the iron filings behaved that way.
3. What have you observed based on the new arrangements of the magnets towards the iron fillings?
Did it change or not? Why or why not?
