CHARLES' LAW
COMBINED GAS
LAW
"The combined gas law states
that the product of the pressure
and volume of a fixed amount of
gas is directly proportional to its
Kelvin temperature. "

The mathematical equation
for the combined gas law is
SAMPLE PROBLEM
A sample of O2 (oxygen gas) occupies a volume of 1.62L at 755 mmHg
pressure and a temperature of 0 oC. What volume, in liters, will this gas
sample occupy at 725 mmHg pressure at 50 oC?

Given values:

P1 = 755 mmHg P2 = 725 mmHg

V1 = 1.62L V2 = ?
T1 = 0 oC + 273K = 273K T2 = 50 oC + 273 = 323K

IDEAL GAS
LAW
Advance Chemistry
INTRODUCTION
- The ideal gas law gives the
relationships among the four
variables temperature,
pressure, volume, and molar
amount for a gaseous
substance at a given set of
conditions.
IDEAL GAS LAW

- Mathematically, the ideal gas law

has the form

where:
P = pressure R = ideal gas constant
V = volume T = temperature
n = number of moles
IDEAL GAS LAW

value of R is the same for all gases under normally

encountered conditions of temperature, pressure, and
volume
SAMPLE PROBLEM

The colorless, odorless, tasteless gas carbon monoxide, CO, is a by-

product of incomplete combustion of any material that contains the
element carbon. Calculate the volume, in liters, occupied by 1.52 moles
of this gas at 0.992 atm pressure and a temperature of 65 oC.

Given values:

P = 0.992 atm n = 1.52 moles

V=? T = 65 oC + 273 K = 338 K
