Joey - The Miniature Baby Kangaroo

We all would have seen a kangaroo,

if not in real then on television or a
magazine. It is a huge animal; an
adult kangaroo is in fact taller than
a human being and weighs close to
100 kilograms.

You would be surprised to know

that a new-born baby kangaroo is
as small as a house-fly, or even a
bee! It measures a mere one inch in size and weighs less than a gram, and is called a
joey.

The Tiny Joey

There must be a logical explanation for this massive difference in size between an
adult kangaroo and baby kangaroo though…

A kangaroo is a marsupial, which means a mammal whose baby is not fully developed
at birth. The baby at birth is actually an embryo , and travels through its mother’s
birth canal supported by her fur all the way to the pouch on her belly. The new-
born remains in its mother’s pouch till fully developed during the gestation period,
which may be anything from 30-400 days depending on the species.

The Joey Looks Like…

A new-born Joey is pink in colour, has no hair and its eyes are shut. But when it finally

emerges from its mother’s pouch, it has hair on its body.

Characteristics of the Adult

Kangaroo

A kangaroo is found in Australia. It has

very strong and massive hind legs on
which it hops around. In fact, it can
spring across a fence nine feet high or
leap an amazing 30 feet in a single
bound. The kangaroo’s tail helps it
maintain its balance while it hops. But it
cannot move backwards.

Interestingly, the kangaroo exhibits an irregular activity pattern, meaning it is active

at night and during low light.

Generally, an herbivore, the diet of a kangaroo varies from species to species.
