MEMORANDIUM TO THE PRINCIPAL

Comer Elementary School Media Center

Dear Dr. Sailors,

While working with Mrs. Cary, I have had the opportunity to spend time in your fantastic

media center. While there, I evaluated the Comer Media Center. I analyzed using the School

Librarian Evaluation Instrument, last updated in August 2019. After completing the evaluation,

we found the media center scored as follows:

Level IV Level III Level II Level I

Standard 1: Instructional Partnership X

Standard 2: Role of Reading X

Standard 3: Information & Tech Literacy X

Standard 4: Instructional Leadership X

Standard 5: Effective Practices for Research X

Standard 6:Program Planning & Administration X

Standard 7: Positive Learning Environment X

Standard 8: Collection Development X

Standard 9: Professionalism X

Standard 10:Communication X
The Comer Comet Media Center is a collaborative 21st-century program based on

observation and rubric data. Mrs. Cary takes pride in being the school media specialist,

supports student growth, and fosters a love of reading.

When looking at ways to grow, I call them glows and grows. One area you all can grow

in is collaboration. Though Mrs. Cary does a great job communicating with the educators in the

building, her fixed schedule makes it challenging to find time to accomplish all tasks in her day.

This can affect the positivity and growth of the media program.

I have outlined action steps below to support your media center's growth at Comer

Elementary.

All the BEST,

Missy May
Action Steps

Standard 1: Level II- To foster a successful 21st-century media center, time has to be given to
collaboratively plan with fellow media specialist and fellow educators. Collaboration helps
successfully bridge the gaps between, home, the classroom, and available resources.

Standard 1 was rated a Level II due to the time restraints on the media specialist because of the
fixed schedule. This standard can grow to a Level III or IV with adequate support in the media
center’s schedule. If the schedule could be flexible, that would be best, however I know
budgets can make this difficult. It could be possible to use resources within the building to
create additional support for Mrs. Cary and allow her the flexibility to spend time collaborating
with colleagues.

Standard 8: Level III- Standard 8 was rated a level 3 due to the robust collection Mrs. Cary has
developed.

Looking at Standard I and seeing the increased need for collaboration, this goes hand-in-hand.
With additional collaboration, Mrs. Cary can continue to build the collection to support grade
level curriculum and students interest. Additional titles added to start books clubs could also
support needs and interest of students and educators. Additionally, collaborating with all

stakeholders, will support Mrs. Cary in maintaining an up-to-date and appealing collection.
