So, here we are in Trafalgar Square
and the centrepiece is Nelson’s
Column, built to honour Admiral
Horatio Nelson, who led the British
to Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar.
Nelson’s Column is 50 metres high
and is decorated with four bronze
battle scenes. At the base of the
column, there are four bronze lions
and there are two large fountains
either side of the monument.
Across the square, behind Nelson’s
Column is the National Gallery,
home to Western European
paintings from the 13th to the 19th
centuries. As you can see, no cars
pass through Trafalgar square, as
it is pedestrianised, but it is easy
to get to as seventeen different
bus routes go around it as well
as several underground stations
nearby. Oh, and it’s open free of
charge day and night!
