Last time, we simulate the magnetization characteristic of DC Shunt Generator.

Now we are
moving forward in another topic and activity which is the speed control of DC motor by field resistance
control. Like in the previous simulation, the circuit is compost of power switch button, the load,
voltmeter, ammeter, dc motor, and rheostat. We also used rheostat in magnetization characteristic but
in this activity, the set up use two rheostat, one for field resistance and another one for armature
resistance. The field and armature resistance are the two variable in this circuit that will affects the
output of the DC Motor.

So I begin in reading a bit about the activity, its theory and also other information about it. Then
I start in reading the procedure before proceeding to the actual simulation. From what I learned in
previous activities, it is easy for me to do the task if I will read first the whole instruction for me to
familiarize what I’m going to do and also to have a clue for the concept of the task. Upon reading the
instruction and looking at the final output, it a bit confusing on the part on how I saw the wires
connected but up until I proceed, its actually way better to do because it has no charges only letters for
each terminal. I begin doing the instruction, I take the steps one by one so that I will avoid making a
mistake and repeating my work. The process goes well and I finish the activity after a couple of checking
if I done it right. After that, I move to the next part which is the checking if I done the wiring correctly
and I’m glad that It was working. Next to checking, I proceed to making the test and the table for data.
As written in the instruction, we can set the voltmeter by the help of second slider or in the armature
resistance. This changes affect the reading in ammeter and speedometer as we move the first slider.
When the first slide or the field resistance adjust or move, the reading shows that current and
speedometer react to it. As per shown in the data that was made, as the current increases, the
speedometer decreases its speed. For example, from a value of .1 A, its equivalent speed is 2500 rpm.
But as the current increases to .6 A, its equivalent speed now is only 1575. This data shows that the
effect of the field resistance to current is inversely proportional to the reading of the speedometer. The
resistance made by the rheostats controls the current and the speed that the motor produced.

Overall, this activity shows how the speed as control through the rheostat and also it shows how
the variable reacts to each of them as any changes happens.
Conclusion

After I finish this activity, I learn a lot on how the speed in DC shunt motor being controlled. And
also I starting to become interested on how other stuff about the motor and generator work. After the
simulation, I was able to understand that controlling the motor is not the typical way that I know, it has
the process and explanation on how it done. From this activity, it gives me the idea that different
components made those process in the generator and motor possible. This are other conclusion I made
after I finish the activity:

1. The process of controlling the speed of DC motor is more technical that I thought in a way that
there is a component that acts upon it for the process happens.
2. The effect of the adjustment of field resistance is directly proportional to the speed of the
motor. As the resistance decreases, the rpm also decreases which is inversely proportional to
the flow of current.
3. The work done by rheostat does not end in just one function but it shows from the previous up
until now that it has a part that helps the whole machine to process different work.
4. For the simulation that I done, it is way more easy I guess because it only place letters to all we
need to do is to connect it with the designated letter that was written in the instruction.
5. As per the relationship that was shown in the table, it shows that as the current increases, the
rpm of the motor decreases react to what changes happens.
