USAPANG EUT: A Webinar on Safe Sex and the Importance of Contraceptives seek to
increase adolescent and youth resilience and protection. Educate. Understand. Talk. This
program is led by Samahang Itataguyod ang Kabataan at Layuning Alay sa Bayan
(SIKLAB) Soro-Soro. It tackles consent and reproductive health and focuses on the youth of
Biñan, Laguna.
The State shall mobilize existing coordinative and legal mechanisms related to the prevention of
adolescent pregnancies, and to strengthen the adolescents' capacity to make autonomous and
informed decisions about their reproductive and sexual health by ensuring access to
comprehensive sexuality education and reproductive health and rights services Executive (Order
No. 141, s. 2021 | Official Gazette of the Republic of the Philippines). The EO was issued to
address the underlying reasons for the increased number of adolescent pregnancies. Data from
the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics System of the Philippine Statistics Authority recorded a
total of 183,967 live births among adolescents aged 10-19 years in 2018, equivalent to 504 live
births per day in the said age group, and 180,916 in 2019 for the same age group, equivalent to
495 live births per day (Ruth Abbey Gita-Carlos, 2021).
Relatively, CALABARZON ranks 1st with the highest live births among 10-19 years old
nationwide (POPCOM CALABARZON, 2021). With this, we must strengthen youth participation
in responsible sexual and reproductive health, by lowering the incidence of teenage pregnancies,
unintended pregnancies, and maternal mortality, and increasing safe motherhood practices
(UPDATED PHILIPPINE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2017-2022 - National Youth
Commission, 2021).
The State recognizes and guarantees the human rights of all persons including the right to health
which includes reproductive health, the right to education and information, and the right to
choose and make decisions for themselves in accordance with their religious convictions, ethics,
cultural beliefs, and the demands of responsible parenthood (Republic Act 10354: The
Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 | Philippine Commission on
Women, 2012).
We must promote health and well-being while also expanding enabling environments. The
Samahang Itataguyod Ang Kabataan At Layuning Alay Sa Bayan (SIKLAB) Soro-Soro seeks to
contribute to one of the set objectives for youth in health defined in the Philippine Youth
Development Plan (PYDP) 2017-2022, where youth are resilient, well-nourished physically,
mentally, sexually, healthy and are protected from financial health crisis.
USAPANG EUT: A Webinar on Safe Sex and the Importance of Contraceptives aims to
strengthen youth participation in responsible sexual and reproductive health. It will maximize the
use of media and communications for health promotion, particularly for the rights and well-being
of youth.
