Position Paper 

Making a Position Paper 

Things to consider before writing: 

➢ Delegates  who  submit  work  by  the  stipulated  date  (March  1,  2021,  11:59 PM 

CST) will be eligible for an award. 

➢ The  position  paper is an essential document for the knowledge of the topic 

and  the  status  of  the  country  or  representative  that  the  student  will  take 

before  entering  the  committee.  The  format  used  in  UDEMUN  consists  of a 

heading  and  3  paragraphs,  and  the  template  that  each  student  will fill out 

with  their  corresponding  information  may  be  found  at  the  end  of  this 

document. 

➢ For  proper  research  and  development  on  the  subject  and  a  successful 

position  paper,  it  will  be  necessary  to  delve  into  the  subject,  your  country, 

and  the  relationship  between  both.  Additionally,  they  should  be  written  in 

the  third  person,  if  the  committee  warrants  it,  and  do  not  use  the  first 

person, or “I” if it refers to the country's point of view. 

Structure of paragraphs: 

1. History of the topic. 

2. Topic related to the country, past International actions, and policy. 

3. Proposed solutions. 

 
 
 
 
 
Delivery format: 

1. The PDF must be submitted by March 1, 2021, at 11:59 PM CST. 

2. Papers  must  be  submitted  in  the  committee´s  corresponding  Google 

Forms, which may be found on the event's official website.

3. The  template  to  be  completed  with  the position paper for delivery is at the 

end  of  this  document.  It  is  essential  that  delivery  is  through  a  copy  of  this 

template. 

4. The  document  must  have  two  or  three  pages  in  Times  New  Roman,  12 

point font, double spaced. 

5. All  papers  must  have  citations,  references,  in-texts,  and  footnotes  of  any 

style will be accepted. 

6. Committees will accept only one position paper from each delegate. 

7. Each  committee  that  develops  this  year  will  require  a  position  paper, 

except  the  International  Criminal  Police  Organization  (INTERPOL),  World 

Bank (WB), and Arab League (AL). 

References:  ​CIA  World  Factbook,  UN  website,  your  committee’s  website,  key 

treaties  or  resolutions mentioned in your background guide (try not to use a lot of 

info  from  this  paper),  UN  or  NGO  reports,  and  of  course  your  own  country’s  web 

page,  in  order  to  find  the  current  situation  in  your  country  regarding  your  topic,

1st paragraph: 

History  of  the  topic​:  In  this  paragraph,  you  should  include  the  historical 

information  of  the  topic,  the  impact  it  is  having  on  society  and nations, as well as 

statistics  if  needed.  It  is  advised  to  include  organizations  that  have  positively 

affected  the situation. The more information you find, the more prepared you’ll be 

for  the  debate.  You  are  advised  to  write  the  outline  of  ideas  necessary  for  your 

personal preparation.  

2nd paragraph: 

Your  country’s  policy  and the relation with the topic: Write your country’s position 

regarding  the  topic,  as  well  as  an  example  of  what  the  government  or  an 

organization  is  doing  in  your  delegation.  You  may  provide  statistics  to  inform  on 

the current status of the problem. 


 
 
 
 
 

3rd paragraph: 

Possible  solutions:  State  the  solutions  that  your  country  proposes  to  solve  the 

issue  worldwide.  The  solutions  need to be realistic and useful for any country. You 

can  use  CIA  World  Factbook,  your  country’s  foreign  ministry  website,  domestic 

programs  within  your  country,  such  as  your  country’s  voting  record  on  key 

treaties or resolutions, NGO or UN recommendations, and your creativity.

■ 3.0 Partnership for the goals 

● 3.1  Collisions  between  countries  to  achieve  the 

presidency agenda. 

○ The  resolution  will  be  drafted  and  completed 

during the sessions. 

➢ International Court of Justice (ICJ) (representatives specifications) 

○ First Paragraph:  

■ Narrate  the  events  leading  up  to  the  dispute.  Mention  the 

laws  and  treaties  violated  and explain how they were violated. 

Try  to  focus  on  the  things  the  other  country  did wrong which 

led you to act the way you did.  

○ Second Paragraph:  

■ Explain  the  reason  behind  your  country’s  actions,  why  they 

felt  justified  to  act  the  way  they  did,  and  under  which  laws 
 
 
 
 
and  treaties  are  they  permitted  to  do  so.  Remember  you  are 

trying  to  make  your  country  sound  as  innocent  as  possible. 

Try  to  focus  on the information that does not incriminate your 

country.

4. When the document is ready, it should be downloaded as a PDF file. 

5. When  you  have  the  PDF  file,  upload  it  to  your  corresponding  Google 

Forms.
