BrailaMUN 2023 - Position Paper Guidelines

➔ General Specifications
The Position Paper is an essential document when it comes to your academic preparation for
the upcoming conference and an important step in the process of any MUN. Its purpose is to
help you understand your country’s position on the given topic. It discusses the issues from
the perspective of the country you’re representing and summarizes their policy, their
background, and even their potential solutions.

The formatting recommendations are as follows: Times New Roman, 12pt, 1.5 space,
Justified. Your document should be around 1 or 2 pages long, not including the Heading and
the Bibliography. While writing your position paper, always seek out official sources that
offer clear and objective information on your country’s stance.
All the delegates who wish to be eligible for an award must submit their Position Paper
within the given deadline.
Position Papers shall be comprised of the following sections:
➔ Section A. Heading which will include:
1. The committee you are in;
2. The country you are representing;
3. The agenda.
It is not recommended to include your name in the Heading.
➔ Section B. Introduction of the topic
A brief presentation of the topic at hand, with a background of the issue and its relevance at
the moment. It should not exceed a paragraph of 8 lines.

➔ Section C. Past actions


This section refers to past actions undertaken by your country at a regional, national and/or
international level. This section addresses the historical context or reasoning behind the your
country’s stance. Further, it should mention how the UN has tackled this issue in the past, any
measures that have been taken in collaboration or against your country, and whether they
were effective or not. If applicable, include any past actions regarding the given topic,
undertaken by your country either 1) at a domestic and/or 2) an international level. In the rare

event that your country was not involved in any past actions, you should write about the past
actions of the international community as a whole.

➔ Section D. Country’s position


This section should be the largest when you’re planning your Position Paper. It should
highlight where your country stands in relation to the issue, its policies, and how it believes
the international community should act. You should emphasize your country’s actions. Search
for officials’ statements, government issues, UN resolutions where possible, and measures
adopted regarding domestic legislation and evaluate your country’s position at UN meetings.
Your main focus should be achieving the goals of the current administration.

➔ Section E. Country’s solutions


Think about specific and realistic proposals in regard to the problems presented. Always bear
in mind that these solutions will be presented to the entire international community and the
ultimate aim is to reach a consensus, therefore, they should be applied on an international
level. Analyze their way of implementation and how they are viable for the discussed issue,
especially the expected outcome. Bear in mind that all the solutions have to be in accordance
with your country’s stance.

➔ Section F. Conclusion
You should summarize the main points of the topic, your country’s policy, and the proposed
solutions.

➔ Section G. Bibliography
Lastly, your Paper must include a bibliography. We recommend using the following citation
styles: MLA 9th edition, APA 7th Edition, and Oxford. Plagiarism will not be tolerated
under any circumstances. Note that your document will be thoroughly checked, and, in the
event of plagiarism, you will not be eligible for any awards.
