NODES

Introduction:

 Nodes are points, the strategic spots in a city into which an observer can enter, and which are intensive foci
to and from which he is traveling.
 They may be primary junctions, places of a break in transportation, a crossing or convergence of paths,
moments of shift from one structure to another.

Primary nodes:

THN1

Tiruvottriyur metro node is the second busiest node in the Tiruvottriyur

highway, it serves as the entry for the bus depot, with the metro station situated
on the road makes it busy all the time, it has lot of commercial activities, as
the presence of depot increases the bus flow, it is high pedestrian and high
vehicular intensity node.

Analysis:

 There is heavy congestion in this node during day time from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm because it is close to
Vadivudai Amman Kovil where about 500 people visit every day.
 High number of commercial establishments also add to the congestion of the node and cause pedestrian and
vehicular conflict.

Inference:

 The heavy congestion can be avoided with proper orientation of all modes of transportation and pedestrian
pathway.

THN2

Periyar statue node is the busiest node in TH road, it is situated

in educational and commercial zone, there are heavy pedestrian and
vechicular activity, this node is located near Vellayan Chettriyar school,
so, it has high intensity zone from 8-9 AM and 4-6 PM.

Analysis:

 In this node, student’s commute involves variety of modes i.e., bus, metro, shared van, shared auto, bicycle,
drop off by cars and motorized two wheelers and walking.
 In this zone, the speed limit is 15 to 30 km/hr.

Inference:

 Speed reduction can be ensured through the provision of traffic calming measures like speed breakers,
raised crossings, narrowing of the road width coupled with provision of relevant road signs and markings.

TNH3

THN 3 - Sannathi street node serves as the entry to the Arulmigu

Adipureeswarar Sannathi temple, it is situated in commercial and
residential zone, the Kaladipet station makes the node busy,
pedestrian and vehicle intensity are moderate to high.
Analysis:

 There is heavy congestion in this node during day time from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm because it is close to
Arulmigu Adipureeswarar Sannathi Temple where about 200 people visit every day.
 High number of commercial establishments and road encroachment also add to the congestion of the node.

Inference:

 The heavy flow of vehicles should be manually managed by a traffic police to avoid accidents and chaos.

ENNORE EXPRESS X MANALI HIGH ROAD:

 This node is a junction of Ennore Expressway and Manali high road. It connects Madhavaram and Manali to
Tirvottiyur.
 Manali is an industrial area in the northern part of Chennai. Important chemical plants like CPCL, MPL
and TPL are present here.

Analysis:

 Over speeding and reckless driving of trucks makes this node accident prone.
 Encroachment of service lanes by truck parking in Ennore Expressway makes it unusable.

Inference:

 Proper parking space should be designed for the parking of trucks.

ENNORE EXPRESSWAY 1:

 This node is the junction of Ennore Expressway and Apparsamy Koil Street. Apparsamy Koil road connects
Tirvottiyur high road and Ennore Expressway.
 It has high vehicular intensity as the Ennore Expressway is dotted with industries. The major users of this
node is two-wheelers.

Analysis:

 This node has many potholes.

 The junction has no speed breakers and no sufficient street light making it accident prone.

Inference:

 Apparsamy road should be laid again to avoid accidents. The quality of the road should be maintained as per
government guidelines.
 Proper signage and speed breakers should be installed in the junction.
