WU COTM Strength of materials Group

Assignment

1. The uniform beam is supported by two rods AB and CD that have cross sectionanal areas
of 10mm2 and 6mm2 respectively. If d=0.5m,determine the average normal stress in each
rod.

2. The joint is fastened together using two bolts. Determine the required diameter of the
bolts if the allowable shear stress for bolts is 110mpa.Assume each bolt supports an equal
portion of the load.

3. The two steel wires AB and AC are used to support the load.If both wires have an
allowable tensile stress of 200Mpa,determine the required diameter of each wire if the
applied load is p=5kN

4. For problem 3 above if both wires have an allowable tensile stress of 180Mpa ,and wire
AB has a diameter of 6mm and AC has a diameter of 4mm,determine the greatest force P
that can be applied to chain before one of the wires fails.
5. An aluminum wire having a diameter d _ 2 mm and length L _ 3.8 m is subjected to a
tensile load P (see figure). The aluminum has modulus of elasticity E _ 75 GPa. If the
maximum permissible elongation of the wire is 3.0 mm and the allowable stress in
tension is 60 MPa, what is the allowable load Pmax?
