Comparing and Contrasting Content of Materials Viewed to Other to
Other Sources of Information: Printed Advertisements.

PRETEST

Look at the printed advertisements. Let’s compare and contrast them.

Write Comparing or Contrasting before each statement.

Chocolate Drink A

Chocolate Drink B
______ 1. The two advertisements are about chocolate drinks.

______ 2. Chocolate Drink B has malt and barley, but Chocolate Drink A
doesn’t have these ingredients.

______ 3. Both drinks have milk.

RECAP

A source is what you turn to for information about a topic. Sources of

information can be books, magazines, newspapers, scholarly journal articles,
films, television shows, radio programs, web sites, personal interviews and
others.
They generally fall under print sources, non-print sources, and
electronic sources.

LESSON

We see advertisements when we read a newspaper or watch television.

An advertisement is a paid announcement, as of goods for sale, in newspapers
or magazines, on radio or television, or online, etc.
Today, our lesson is about Comparing and Contrasting Content of
Materials Viewed to Other Sources of Information: Printed
Advertisements.
Print advertisement is a widely used form of advertising. These appear
in newspapers or magazines and are sometimes included as brochures or
flyers. Through advertisements, we are able to know different products,
brands, their features and promotions in marketing.
We need to know how to compare or examine products similarities;
and also their contrast, the products differences so that we can choose the
right product for our demands.
We use key words also like as well as, alike, both, just like, similar to,
the same as, too, and others in comparing; while in contrasting, we use
although, but, besides, however, even though, unlike, while, differs from, and
others.
Look at these printed advertisements. Let’s do the comparing and
contrasting of the two known bread products in the market.
Let’s analyze what they offer in their ads by writing on the table below.
Bread A Bread B

Bread A Bread B
1. What are the products in the ads?
Plain Sliced bread Plain Sliced bread
2. What is the description of each product?
White bread White bread
3. How are the products done every day?
Guaranteed baked fresh everyday Baked fresh all day
4. What do the products campaign for?
Lock out the virus, stay at home! Fighting hunger together!
5. How do the products help others?
N/A Shares ₱ 2 to help feed Filipinos

To clearly see the comparisons and contrasts of the printed

advertisements, let’s plot them in the Venn diagram.

Now, let’s do comparing and contrasting the printed advertisements.

The comparison between Bread A and Bread B are:
 Bread A and Bread B are both plain sliced bread.
 Just like Bread B, Bread A is a white bread.
 They are alike for being freshly baked everyday.
On the other hand, their contrasts are as follow:
 Bread A campaigns for Lock out the virus, stay at home! while,
Bread B campaigns for Fighting hunger together!
 Unlike Bread A, Bread B is sharing ₱ 2 to help feed Filipinos
for every bread pack sold.
In comparing and contrasting sources of information viewed in printed
advertisements, we improve our comprehension by highlighting important
details and making abstract ideas more concrete to reduce confusion between
related ideas.
In this time of Covid-19 crisis, everyone tries to help one another and
shows kindness in their own little way. Do you also do that?

Guided Practice
Look at the print advertisements and read the statements that follow. Do a
double finger heart if the statement is comparing and do a single
finger heart if it is contrasting.

Advertisement A Advertisement B

1. Advertisement A offers vegetables and fruits, while Advertisement B

offers only vegetable.
- The answer is single finger heart! It’s contrasting! Let’s move on to
the next number.
2. Both shops are for home deliveries.
- The answer is double finger heart! It’s comparing! Let’s proceed to
the last item.
3. Before ordering from Advertisement A, you register first, unlike in
Advertisement B, no registration is needed.
- The answer is single finger heart! It’s contrasting!

WRAP-UP

To wrap everything up that we have talked about in this lesson, let us

always remember that:

Sources of Information could be print sources, non-print sources, and

electronic sources.

Print advertisements are printed in hard copy in publications such as

newspapers, magazines, journals, brochures or fliers or likely to be read by
the target audience.

Comparing is showing the similarities, while Contrasting is showing

differences between two things that are related in some way. We use key words
in comparing and contrasting.

Venn diagram helps to visually represent the similarities and

differences between two concepts using circles that overlap to show
commonality while circles that do not overlap do not share those traits for the
relationships among things or finite groups of things.
