Subject: Mathematics Date: _____________

Topic: Surface Area & Volume of Cubes & Cuboids

Recap of the previous concept:

Volume= length x breadth x height

Unit: cube of the unit of lengths

1𝑚 = 1000000c𝑚

1c𝑚 = c𝑚

Surface Area of a cube or cuboid:

A cube / cuboid has 6 surfaces. Finding out area of each surface and adding them
all makes total surface area of the cube / cuboid.

Ex: 14 A Q1-3 are already done in the class based on the concept above.

New concept:

Description:

 If the volume of a cuboid is known and length of two sides is given then we
can find out the length of third side by:

V=lxbxh

=h (if volume, length and breadth is known)

=b (if volume, length and height is known)

= l (if volume, breadth and height is known)

Q1. For a cuboid of volume 4032 𝒄𝒎𝟑 shown below, find out the following:

a). the height of cuboid

b). total Surface Area of the cuboid

Q2. Complete the following table:

Length breadth Height Volume Total Surface Area

a. 31cm 5cm 2170c𝑚
b. 7.5cm 12cm 540c𝑚

Ex: 14-A Q 3 c,d & Q 4 (all parts) can be done based on the concept above.
Description:

A cube has all sides equal to each other i.e. l=b=h

So, Volume of a Cube= l x l x l

Volume of a cube = 𝑙

If we have to convert a given cuboid into a cube using the same amount of matter,
we will first find out the volume of cuboid using given dimensions.

Since the cube is to be formed using the same volume we can find the dimensions
of cube by putting the volume of cuboid equal to 𝑙

i.e. V = 𝑙

𝑉 / = l (length of each side will be the cube root of volume. Cube root is found
by prime factorization)

Example: Melt a cuboid of length 8cm, breadth 2cm & height 4cm to make a cube.
What will be the length of each side of the cube.

Volume of cuboid = 8x2x4 =64c𝑚

Since volume of cube will also be the same, so

Volume of Cube = 𝑙

64 = 𝑙

(4x4x4)= 𝑙

4 =𝑙

l = 4 cm

Ex: 14-A Q5 Q6 Q7 & Q12 can be done based on the concept above.
Q3. A container of length 6 cm breadth 4 cm and height 9 cm is filled with
orange juice. If the same amount of juice is to be stored into a perfect cube
shaped container what will be the size of its each side.

Description:

Volume of Hollow Cube / Cuboid:

To find the volume of a hollow cuboid we will first find the volume of outer
boundary of the cuboid and then subtract the volume of air/empty space from it.

Let the Volume of outer boundary of cuboid is 𝑉

𝑉 =axbxc

Volume of empty space is 𝑉

𝑉 =pxqxr

Volume of Hollow Cuboid = 𝑉 − 𝑉

Q4. Find the volume of the following Hollow Brick.

Ex: 14-A Q8 Q9 & Q10 (i) can be done based on the concept above.
Description:

Surface Area in contact:

Surface area in contact with water means we have to consider only that area of
surface that touches the water.

Example:

If a container has length 50 cm, breadth 25cm and height 75cm and the height of
water level is 60cm.
Q5. A water tank of length 2.5m breadth 1.5m and height 3m contains water
such that the level of water is 1m below the total height of the water tank.
Find the surface area of the tank that is in contact with water.

Ex: 14-A Q10 (ii), Q11 Q14 can be done based on the concept above.

For Q-14 simple principles of Rate to be applied
