Ph comparison among

coca-cola drinks
TOPIC

To check the Ph of different types of coca-

cola drinks. the samples used in the
experiment were an original flavor, vanilla
flavor, less sugar, no sugar, and coca-cola
which were kept outside for 24 hours. The Ph
of coca-cola at different temperatures was
also investigated.
INTRODUCTION

To investigate and draw an observation

on the Ph between different samples of
coca-cola and to understand more about
its harmful nature.

PH

Ph is the quantitative measure of acidity

or basicity of aqueous or other liquid
solutions . The range goes from 0 to 14,
with 7 being neutral. Ph less than 7
indicates acidity whereas Ph greater
than 7 indicate a base.
COCA-COLA (CONTENTS)

coca - cola the most consumed soda in the

world is loved by all age groups but does
the contents of this popular drink allow
us to have it more. Approximately 90%
of coca-cola is water, the carbonated part
is purified carbon dioxide which gives the
drink its fizz. the sweet taste of coca-cola
is obviously from sugar, it is known that
there is about 10.6 g of sugar in 100 ml
of coca-cola. The dark color of coca-cola
comes from a caramel made especially for
this. the tartness of coca-cola comes from
phosphoric acid. coca-cola is also slightly
bitter which is because of the use of
caffeine. Another major ingredient of
coca-cola is high fructose corn syrup,
which is really harmful to the body.
REASONS TO AVOID COCA-COLA

1. HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP CONTENT - HFCS also

known as glucose-fructose, is a sweetener made from corn
starch. like the production of corn syrup, the starch is broken
down into glucose by the enzymes, the corn syrup is further to
D-xylose isomerase to convert some of the glucose into fructose.
HFCS has a longer shelf life and is also cheaper in production
which makes it ideal for the production of coca-cola. Unlike
regular sugar, HFCS heads to the liver first and triggers
lipogenesis which is when cholesterol is produced, which causes
a fatty liver.

2. REGULAR SUGAR - drinking excessive amounts of coca-cola

allows the sugar to create insulin surges and along with the blood
sugar spike causes inevitable crashes and then the craving for
more sugar. with continuous consumption, a person could end up
with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

3. PHOSPHORIC ACID - the phosphoric acid used in these drinks is

harmful to born density and also bad for the tooth enamel. the
presence of phosphoric acid reduces the growth of mold or bacteria
which happens very rapidly in sugary drinks.
VARIABLES

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE -

the sample of coca-cola that was taken for

testing.

DEPENDENT VARIABLE -

the different values of Ph observed from different

samples.
MATERIALS REQUIRED

1. PH METER- it is an electrical device used to

measure hydrogen-ion activity. Acidity or
basicity of a solution.

2. SAMPLES OF COCA COLA

1. original coca-cola
2. vanilla flavored
3. less sugar coca-cola
4. zero sugar coca-cola
5. coca cola left outside for 24 hours
6. coca-cola at different temperatures

3. WATER BATH AT
TEMPERATURES 70,60, AND 50
DEGREES
PROCEDURE

The procedure for the experiment is fairly

simple, we are just checking the ph of different
samples of coca-cola using a ph meter.

WORKING OF THE PH METER

A pH meter consists of three different parts: an internal

electrode, a reference electrode, and a high input
impedance meter. Glass probe often contains two
electrodes -- an internal electrode and a reference
electrode. The internal electrode is a Silver wire covered
with Silver Chloride (Ag/AgCl wire), and the reference
electrode is often made up of the same materials. Inside
the probe is a buffer solution at a pH of 7. Measured pH is
the difference in [H+] between the reference buffer
inside the probe and the sample solution.
ANALYSIS OF DATA

The ph of the original coca-cola by using a ph

meter reveals that its ph is 2.78. The ph of coca-
cola tells us that it is acidic, this is because of the
content of phosphoric acid in the manufacture of
coca-cola. As a fizzy drink, it contains plenty of
dissolved carbon dioxide, but this makes very
little contribution to the acidity. Coca-cola which
was left outside for 24 hours was also tested for
its ph and it was observed that the ph remains
almost the same (2.76) which is another evidence
that the carbon dioxide content in the solution
does not affect the ph that much.

If you add acid to a solution the concentration

of hydrogen ions (acidity) increases and the pH
decreases.

the next set of tests was done on vanilla flavored coca-

cola which revealed that the amount of sugar in
solutions does not affect the ph levels. Sugar is a pH-
neutral substance, meaning that its pH value is usually
more or less than 7, but close. However, raw and
unprocessed sugar is slightly basic in nature, while
white sugar and brown sugar are both slightly acidic.
when tested the ph of vanilla-flavored coca-cola was
2.77.

in the same way, the ph of less sugar coca-cola was

also investigated, again here the sugar being a
neutral substance shows no change in its ph value.,
however in coca-cola which has zero sugar (Coke
Zero) uses several common artificial sweeteners,
including aspartame and acesulfame potassium (Ace-
K). The remaining ingredients are carbonated water,
caramel color, food additives, and natural flavors.
Aspartame is acidic in nature when digested hence
the ph of coke 0 is 3.07.
in my experiment, I had also tested the ph of coca-
cola at different temperatures namely 70, 60, and
50 degrees. at 70 degrees the ph was 2.31, at 60
degrees it was 2.32, and at 50 degrees the ph was
seen to be 2.33 from this we can come to a
conclusion that with an increase in temperature the
ph decreases. in the same way, cold coca-cola had a
ph of 2.35. So ph increases with a decrease in
temperature.
