Purpose/Description
This position is responsible for assisting with the coordination and management of all
aspects of the Radiation Safety Program at UNT and working with the Radiation Safety
Officer (RSO) in maintaining compliance with the University’s Broad Scope Radioactive
Material License and X-ray registrations with the Texas Department of State Health
Services (TDSHS) Bureau of Radiation Control. This position also assists the Hazardous
Materials Officer with waste movement and handling plus dosimetry dissemination and
help the RSO with the distribution of the dosimetry reports and completion of the summary
report once a quarter. The position also packs waste from labs, administers quarterly lab
surveys and maintains records for the future TDSHS lab inspections.
Representative Tasks
• Assists with the coordination and manages all aspects of the Radiation Safety
Program at UNT, and works with the Radiation Safety Officer in maintaining
compliance with the University's Radioactive Material License, and X-ray
registrations with the TDSHS and Bureau of Radiation Control.
• Responsible for the radiation monitoring (dosimetry) program which requires
maintaining a complex database, coordinating with users, receiving and sending
dosimeters and preparing reports for the RSO of exposures.
• Performs quarterly radioactive material lab audits and surveys.
• Coordinates with users and when needed will transport, consolidate, sample, and
prepare for shipment radioactive waste generated by the university.
• Maintains records of all ongoing operations for future TDSHS program
inspections.
• Assists the Hazardous Materials Officer with waste movement as needed.

Supervision
Given: Typically has no supervisory responsibility for staff but provides informal
guidance and support to new team members, as well as on-the-job training on specific
tasks required to perform job effectively and procedures to follow. May supervise hourly
or student employees.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in related field and four years of experience in biosafety inspections
and emergency response; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and
experience. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required:
• Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to substantiate results
from reports using spreadsheets and analysis.
• Supervisory skills.
• Ability to obtain and retain appropriate certifications and licensing.
• Ability to provide emergency response within 30 minutes when scheduled.
• Thorough knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations
relating to area of assignment.
• Extensive working knowledge of building construction and layout and ability to
read blueprints, schematic drawings, etc., and determine sites for inspection and
the ability to perform inspections.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use fingers
and hands to feel, grasp, operate or handle objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands
and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The
employee is occasionally required to walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move
up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust
focus. Ability to lift 50 lbs and climb stairs/ladders. Ability to work from heights greater
than four feet and in underground tunnels, manholes, and crawl spaces.
