Topic: Introduction to Research

LECTURE-1
DATE: JANUARY 29, 2022
Learning Outcomes 3

Following completion of this lecture the student must be able to:

 understand research and research methodology.

 describe classification, characteristics of good and bad research.

 interpret the significance of studying research in physiotherapy

profession.
4
Introduction to Research

Research is a process of investigation.

An examination of a subject from different points of view.
It’s not just a trip to the library to pick up a pile of materials.
Research is a hunt for the truth.

Research is an organized and systematic way of finding answers to questions.

 Organized in that there is a structure or method in going about doing research. It is a

planned procedure, not a spontaneous one. It is focused and limited to a specific scope.
5
Introduction to Research (Cont…..)

 Systematic because there is a definite set of procedures and steps which you will
follow. There are certain things in the research process which are always done in order
to get the most accurate results.

 Finding Answers is the end of all research. Whether it is the answer to a hypothesis or
even a simple question, research is successful when we find answers. Sometimes the
answer is no, but it is still an answer.
 Questions are central to research. If there is no question, then the answer is of no use.
Research is focused on relevant, useful, and important questions. Without a question,
research has no focus, drive, or purpose.
Definition of Research 6

In general term research is composed of two syllables,

 A prefix Re
 and a verb Search.

Re means again, a new, ever again. Search means to examine closely and
carefully, to test and try, to probe.

The two words form a noun to describe a careful and systematic study in
some field of knowledge, undertaken to establish facts or principles.
Definition of Research (cont…) 7

In broader term:

 Research is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data to

answer a certain question or to solve a problem.

 Research is a rigorous and systematic way of inquiry to describe a

phenomena and develop explanatory theories and concepts.
8
Definition of Methodology
& Research Methodology

 Methodology is the systematic study of methods within a discipline. It

is a particular procedure or set of procedures.

 Research methodology is a systematic way to solve a problem. It is a

science of studying how research is to be carried out.
9
Classification of Research
Research can be classified from three perspectives
1. Application of research study
 Basic research
 Applied research

2. Objectives in understanding the research

 Descriptive
 Correlational
 Explanatory
 Exploratory

3. Inquiry mode employed

 Structured approach

 Unstructured approach
10
Characteristics of High Quality Research

1. It can be replicated.
2. It is generalizable to other settings.
3. It is based on some logical rationale and tied to theory.
4. It generates new questions
5. It is incremental.
6. It is the activity that should be undertaken for the betterment of society.
11
Characteristics of Bad Quality Research

 Looking for something when it simply is not to be found.

 Plagiarizing other people’s work.
 Falsifying data to prove a point.
 Misrepresenting information and misleading participants.
12
Significance of studying research in physiotherapy
professions
Significance of studying research in 13
physiotherapy professions (cont….)

 Physiotherapists are committed to generate new knowledge that

update their practice and validates best practice for healthcare
delivery.

 Physiotherapy research helps to implement new changes in the life

long care of individuals and is used to develop treatments that
provide the most optimum level of care.

 Research generates information from physiotherapy diagnosis and

treatment which help to define the unique role of physiotherapy as
a profession.
Significance of studying research in 14
physiotherapy professions (cont….)

 Professional accountability of physiotherapists to their clients is

demonstrated when physiotherapists incorporate research evidence
into their clinical decisions.

 Research also enables physiotherapists to understand a particular

situation about which little is known and explanatory as
exploratory theories and concepts.

 Research may allow physiotherapists to make more informed

decisions in each phase of patient management.
Let’s discuss one article from the 15

attached file
16

Can someone tell the message from the article essential

for clinical practice in physiotherapy through
synopsis of evidence????
A short feedback from learners 17

1. Which one is not the best suited answer for classification of research based on
understanding objectives?
• Descriptive
• Explanatory
• Basic Research
• Correlational

Please write the correct answer (option a/b/c/d) in your ZOOM comment box
