HYDRAULIC STRUCTURE

LECTURER IN-CHARGE: NAME : R.G.V.Deemantha

Dr. R.L.H.L.RAJAPAKSHA INDEX NO. : 170117F
DATE OF SUB : 15/12/2020
1. Introduction

a) General details about the reservoir

❖ Details of the reservoir:-

• Name of the Reservoir - Hiyare Reservoir (D.J.Wimalasurendra Reservior)

• Location - Hiyare , Galle
• Co-ordinates -6.0580915
80.3157707
• Main use – obtaining an increased water supply to the nearby areas.
• Gross capacity – around 380 million liters
• Catchment area – 269 acres

Figure 1.2 – Satellite view of the reservoir

Figure 1.3 – Entrance to the reservoir

b) Elements of the Reservoir

1. Spillway Spillway

• Not accessible to the spillway

Figure 1.4 – Spillway design details

• Length of the weir – 75 ft
• Crest of the weir – 6 ft
• Apron of stones in a bed of 6inch concrete
• Width of apron in the approaching side – 10 ft
• Width of the apron in discharge side – 35 ft

❖ Engineering aspects that needs to be concerned

• Suitable location selection
• Suitable stilling basin

2. Sluice

Sluice
❖ Characteristics of the sluice

• Size - 5’3” x 5’0”

• Wall thickness – 2’6”
• Sluice diameter – 10”
• The pathway to the sluice is a foot bridge from the reservoir bund
• Deck of the bridge consists of concrete slabs supported by steel joists
• Foot bridge is provided with a hand railing

❖ Engineering aspects that needs to be concerned

• Water requirement in the vicinity

• Geo technical investigation of the ground
• Rainfall pattern of the area
• Villagers perspective
3. Reservoir bund

❖ Characteristics of the bund

• Length - 333 feet
• Maximum width of base - 170 feet
• Bund Top Level - 6 feet above water top level
• Slope of the inner face - 3 : 1
• Inner face texture - stone pitching
• Slope of the outer face - 2 :1
• Outer face texture – Turfs
• No significant amount of seepage was observed
• Bund is in good condition
• No soil erosion observed
❖ Engineering aspects that needs to be concerned
• Details about the rainfall pattern of the area from the villagers
• Selecting suitable materials for the bund construction
• Include necessary remedies to avoid seepage through the bund
• Check the slope stability of the bund
• Provide required compaction during bund construction
• Perform necessary geotechnical investigations
4. Water release

• Reservoir water is carried to the “bikke” tank under gravity without any pumping device
• Gradient of the service main is 1:216
• Discharge to the tank is about 1457 liters per minute

5. Design return period

• Any breach of the reservoir will affects life of lots of villagers, animals and properties. So
it is very important to safeguard the spillway and the bund of the reservoir.
• Due to the unexpected changes of the rainfall pattern in our country in these days
according to me design return period must be about 50-100 years.

Common hydraulic structure – Bridge

• Bridge is a structure carrying a road , path, railway, etc across a river, road or other
obstacle. In most cases we can see that the bridges are made of concrete or steel.
• There are about 7 types of bridges;
o Beam bridge
o Truss bridge
o Cantilever bridge
o Arch bridge
o Tied arch bridge
o Suspension bridge
o Cable stayed bridge
• The bridge that I was selected is located at “Dodangoda Junction” connecting
“Dodangoda” and “Ganegama”. The bridge is located across the “Gin River”

❖ Co-ordinates of the bridge:

o N - 6.1366141
o E - 80.1776654

❖ Dimension of the bridge:

o Length – 20m
o Width – 4m
o Height – 7m
❖ Purpose of this structure
o Transportation across “Gin river”

o
❖ Similar structure for the bridge

❖ Lessons learnt from the assignment

Through this assignment we had the chance to visit two hydraulic structures and to do a close
observation about those. Through that I had a chance to get to know about the important
features in a reservoir and a bridge. And also I got the chance to apply my theoretical
knowledge and see the different kind of aspects through this assignment.
