OPHTHALMOLOGICAL TERMS

1. Asthenopia: Eye fatigue due to muscular, environmental or physiological causes.

➔ Symptoms of asthenopia in the eye are responsible for much of the morbidity
in century VI.

2. Buftalmos: Large eyeball in cases of childhood glaucoma.

➔ The diagnosis of buftalmos can be made through a clinical examination and in


most cases, looking at the person can detect the growth of the eyeball.

3. Campimeter: Instrument to measure the visual field.

➔ The campimeter allows to know the state of the peripheral vision and with it,
to discard Glaucoma.

4. Oculist: A person who examines or treats people’s eyes.

➔ The inflammation was close to the eyes, and to prevent it, he went to an
oculist.

5. Glaucoma: A disease of the eye that can cause a person to gradually lose their sight

➔ People think that their vision is blurred by degrees of prolonged stress and
don’t consider having glaucoma.

6. Retinal detachment: An eye problem in which the light sensitive part of the retina
becomes separated from the eyeball causing vision problems

➔ Vision flashes can be an alarming sign of retinal detachment.

7. Vitrectomy: Surgical removal of all or part of vitreous humor for treat pathologies
related to this.

➔ Last week they practiced a vitrectomy on Mary to enhance her vision, so they
managed to focus the light on her retina
8. Melanoma: It’s a tumor that containing dark pigment

➔ Treatments targeting particular protein or gene mutations have improved


survival odds for melanoma and some other cancers like breast cancer

9. Jaeger Test: Test to measure the near vision using lines of different sizes.

➔ With the help of the Jaeger test, the ophthalmologist diagnosed the patient
with myopia.
10. Laser surgery: Often used to treat macular edema and proliferative retinopathy;
involves shrinking the abnormal blood vessels, or sealing the leaking ones.

➔ In 1985, the first laser eye surgery without cutting appeared, by the American
ophthalmologist Stephen Trokel.
