TYPICALLY associated with Penang, char kuey teow is commonly found in coffeeshops and food
courts.
What is uncommon however, is pork-free char kuey teow as the flat rice noodles are usually fried
with lard.

At the Medan Selera Wawasan food court in SS3 Petaling Jaya, Selangor, there is a stall that serves a
pork-free version of the popular dish.

The stall owner Lau Wan, 68, relocated six times before he settled in this food court.
He has been operating the stall there with the help of his family for six years.
Lau said his passion for char kuey teow prompted him to learn how to cook it in Ayer Itam, Penang.
“I went to Penang to get some recipes and devised my own version,” he said.

Lau, who is from Teluk Intan, Perak, used to cook for fishermen on Pangkor island.
To make his pork-free version, Lau first fries the flat noodles with white pepper and his own soy
sauce-chilli paste concoction before adding bean sprouts, cockles and prawns.
As someone who’s been eating at this stall since childhood, I’d say that Lau has managed to maintain
the taste of his food over the years.
“Some of the customers I’ve served since they were kids are now married with children of their own,”
he said.
Clearly, the stall has a loyal clientele and the owner’s friendly interaction with customers keeps them
coming back.
His son Oo Boon said, “We want people to come for the food and we try to interact with them to
create a good relationship.”
Besides the fried kuey teow, the stall also serves fried rice, steamed cockles and rojak.
Lau said rojak was also one of the stall’s specialties as he made the sauce for it.
His version of rojak has pieces of fruit tossed in the sweet-sour sauce, topped with peanuts and fried
crullers.
Also available is tauhu bakar, which features grilled tofu puffs stuffed with bean sprouts, shredded
cucumber and chopped peanuts, flavoured with rojak sauce – this is also highly recommended.
Another dish that is popular with regulars is the sotong kangkung that has water spinach and
cuttlefish flavoured with the same sauce and lime juice, topped with chopped peanuts.

Universiti, Petaling Jaya. It is open daily from 4pm to 9pm, except Tuesdays.
