Good evening, dear members of the committee. My name is Ekaterina Elizarova, I

am a second year student.
The topic of my course paper is " The Usage of Prepositions in Agatha Christie’s
Novel “Murder on the Orient Express”".

2 слайд
The relevance of this work is that a lot of people still underestimate the
importance of prepositions. Without prepositions it is impossible to construct a
sentence competently and explain one's thought clearly. It is also important to find
out how often certain prepositions appear in fiction, here the novel Murder on the
Orient Express will help us.

The aim of my research is to find out how prepositions are used in Agatha
Christie's 'Murder on the Orient Express'.

The presented aim determines the solution of the following tasks:

1. Determine the etymology of origin of some English prepositions
2. Identify the structure of the English preposition system
3. To show the semantics and functions of prepositions
4. To analyse prepositions in Agatha Christie's novel Murder on the Orient Express
5. Interpret the results of the study.

The object of research is prepositions in English.

The subject of the study is the peculiarities of the use of prepositions in the work
"Murder on the Orient Express" by Agatha Christie.
The following methods are used in this work:
Continuous sampling method, descriptive method, quantitative-diagnostic method.
The structure of my work consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a
list of literature and an appendix.

3 слайд
From the theoretical part of my work, we can conclude that the main function of
an English preposition is structural and that prepositions are divided into simple,
derived, complex and compound, examples you can see at the presentation.

4 слайд
Next, I would like to say that if we turn to the classifications of prepositions based
on the structural component, the approach of Aksikienko deserves attention. The
author divides sentences according to the following features: simple, compound,
multi-structural and colloquial, examples you can see on the page 13 in my course
paper, or at the presentation.
5 слайд
I chose the first chapter for my analysis of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient
Express. The following conclusions were drawn: the most used simple preposition
was "in", the most used derivative preposition was "include", and it was the only
preposition.
Some compound prepositions were also found in the text. You can see an example
of this in the presentation. Based on Aksikienko's classification, the semantic
functions of prepositions were also highlighted.

6 слайд
You can see the percentage of the frequency of prepositions used on the
presentation, which shows that almost 86 percent are occupied by simple
prepositions.

7 слайд
Next you can see the analysis of syntactic functions. It is presented both on the
presentation and on the handouts.
In this chapter, the writer describes characters heading together, describing the
place where this action takes place, so this causes frequent use of prepositions with
internal and external relations.

In conclusion, all the objectives and goals were achieved by analysing the
theoretical part and this helped in solving the problems of the practical part.
A preposition is a service word that usually precedes a noun or its syntactic
substitute and connects it with a verb, noun, adjective or adverb (or their
substitutes).
English prepositions often have more than one meaning. Prepositions are important
for constructing and understanding sentences because they are one of the means
that indicate the relationship of words in a sentence and the relationship of a noun
(or pronoun) to other words in the sentence. English used to have case endings,
which have been lost over time. There are almost no case endings in English. Now
prepositions carry the main burden of expressing grammatical relations, they are a
means of expressing the relations of a noun (or pronoun) to other words in a
sentence.
In this paper 3 main classifications have been considered: 1. structural
classification; 2. semantic classification; 3. contextual classification. In the second
part of the paper, the first chapter of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient
Express was analysed and sentences containing a preposition were selected from
the novel.
