INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE OF THE LOWLANDS OF LUZON

Brass Band
An ensemble of woodwind, brass wind and percussion instruments
Usually play in fiestas, religious and civic celebrations
Repertoire may include folksongs, popular music, and dance music
 Woodwinds (Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, Saxophone)
 Brasswinds (Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba/Sousaphone)
 Percussions (snare Drum, Bass Drum, Cymbals)

Las Pinas bamboo Organ


 A National Treasure,can be found in St. Joseph Church in Las Piñas
 It is made of 902 bamboo pipes completed in 1824 under the supervision of Fr. Diego Cera

Angklung ensemble
 Bamboo instrument originated from Indonesia
 Made of bamboo rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame
 Manner of playing the angklung is by rapidly shaking the bottom part of the frame while the other
hand steadily holds the upper part
 Angklung shakers plays only one or two pitches

Pangkat Kawayan
 Popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”, is an orchestra that plays music using
non-traditional bamboo instruments, founded in 1966
 The instruemnts are: Angklung, Bumbong, Kalatok, Talunggating, Kalagong, Pan pipes, Tulali, and
Kiskis

Musikong Bumbong
 Is a Filipino marching band that uses bamboo wind instruments
 The shapes and sizes are similar to brass band instruments but have different sounds
 D’ Orginal Malabon Musikong Bumbong started as a plain Banda de Boca (meaning bibig or mouth)
In Barrio Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896
 Felix Ramos was both the founder and inventor of the bamboo instruments. The first members of
the band were all Katipuneros

Rondalla ensemble
 An ensemble of plucked string instruments sometimes with percussion
 Instruments are: Bandurria, Laud, Octavina, Guitar and Bajo de Uñas

HORNBOSTEL-SACHS SYSTEM
It is a system to classify instruments by how an instrument produce a sound

Aerophones -produce sound primarily by causing a body of air to vibrate because of the air blown inside

Chordophones produce sound through its vibrating strings that is either plucked, strummed or used with a
bow

Membranophones produce sound primarily by way of a vibrating stretched membrane tapped by hands or
sticks

Idiophones produced sound by the vibration of its body caused by the way they are played such as being
struck, scraped, rubbed, shaken, rubbed or plucked.

Electrophones produce sound which are generated by electricity
