 Father of Volleyball :- William


G.(George) Morgan invented the sport
back in 1895.
 Volleyball is now one of the big five
international sports, and the FIVB, with
its 221 affiliated national federations, is
the largest international sporting
federation in the world.

 William George Morgan (1870-1942), who was


born in the Lockport, New York, has gone down in
he originally gave the name "Mintonette.
 Professor Alfred T. Halstead suggested that the
name "Volley Ball”.
 In 1952, the Administrative Committee of the
USVBA (United States Volleyball Association)
voted to spell the name with one word, "Volleyball.

 Antenna :- An Antenna is placed on each side of


the net perpendicular to the sideline and is a vertical
extension of the side boundary of the court. A ball
passing over the net must pass completely between
the antenna without contacting them.
 Length:- 180 cm
 Diameter:- 10mm

 Ace- a serve that hits the floor or


cannot be handled by the receiving
team.
 Bump/underhand pass- a skill used
to pass the ball to the setter (usually
on serve receive).
 Dig- a skill used to keep forcefully
hits the balls from scoring a point.
 Kill- a point scored off a spike.

 Hitters/ Attackers/spikers- player who


spike the ball
 Rotate- where players on the team
receiving the serve move one position
clockwise.
 Dump - press by the setter.
 Overlap- refers to the positions of the
players in the rotation prior to the
contact of the ball.

 Six player from each team are on the


court at one time.
 Games (Sets) are played to 15 or 25
points depending on the level.
 A team needs to win 2 out of 3 games,
or 3 out of 5 games to win the match.
 Teams are allowed up to three hits
successfully return the ball to the
opponents side of the net.

 Players cannot touch or go under the


net.
 Players cannot lift or throw the ball and
cannot use an open hand to hit the ball.
 A ball landing on the line is considered
in.
 A back row player cannot hit the ball
over the net from the front zone area.

 The server has to serve the ball behind the end


line.
 The server can serve either underhand,
overhand or Jump serve.
 The server get only one attempts to serve the ball
over the net.
 If the serving team scores the points, the same
player will keep serving until the opponents score
a point.
 A ball hitting the net and going on over to the
opponents side is a legal serve.

 The uniform of the Libero must be


different from the other team members.
 The libero is allowed to replace in player
that is in a back row position.
 The libero is not allowed to complete an
attack hit from anywhere if at the moment
of contact, the ball is entirely above the top
of the net.
 The libero may not block, attempt to
block or serve.

 A court is 18 meters long and 9meters wide,


divides into two 9 m* 9 m halves by a net.

 “AttAcK LIne” This “3 meter” line divides


the court into “Back Row” and “Front
Row” areas (also called back court and
front court).
 “Free Zone” which is minimum 3 meters
wide and which the player may enter and
play within after the service of ball.

 If a ball comes in the contact with the line,


the ball is considered to be “IN”.
 “coAch restrIctIon AreA” There is
the extension of Dotted line from the
attack line to the end line.
 Lines on the court are 5cm (2" wide).
 Net height for MEN :- 2.43m
